PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, July 2 (PNA) -- A member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Palawan warned beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) against exploiting the use of their automated teller machine (ATM) cards otherwise they might be dropped from the list.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan Board Member Eduardo Modesto Rodriguez, chairman of the Committee on Social Services, warned the beneficiaries of the 4Ps following reports that there are families, who pawn their ATMs to loan sharks, and who use their benefits for gambling.
“We have received reports that some parents are using the money granted to them for gambling while others pawn them to loan sharks instead of paying for their children’s school fees, †said Rodriguez, who filed a resolution asking to drop anyone, who would be found committing the violations.
He also said that there are reports that some grantees of the program are not qualified because they have enough income to provide for the basic needs of their families.
Rodriguez added that “the government money should be used to help the families.†Instead, however, they are being used for depravities, like gambling.
The local office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is investigating the reports of ATM card misuse now, he said.
Rodriguez added that the target of the 4Ps program is to double the number of beneficiaries in Palawan province especially those residing in the different islands.
“This is hampered by the lack of personnel of the DSWD,†he pointed out. (PNA)
