A MONEYLENDER shot dead a laborer on Sunday morning at the second floor of Cogon Market in Cagayan de Oro City.
Police Superintendent Danildo Tumanda, City Public Safety Company chief, identified the victim as Frederick Martinez, 32, who died of a single gunshot wound from an unknown caliber.
The suspect, identified as Datu Kanman Sangcopa, remains at large, police said.
Tumanda said they have yet to determine the suspect’s address in Cagayan de Oro. Sangcopa is allegedly a native of Lanao del Sur province.
PO2 Dorotheo Gales Jr. of Cogon Police Station said the incident happened around 7:20 a.m. Sunday at the second floor of the Cogon market, which is located a few meters away from the police station.
Investigation showed that Martinez wanted to borrow P1,000 from Sangcopa for his sick child. The latter assured to give the money the next day since he ran out of cash that day.
But when Sangcopa returned at the Cogon Market on Sunday, he reportedly failed to give the money to Martinez after he also failed to collect from one of the stall owners at the market.
Tumanda said the victim had said harsh words against the suspect after he failed to keep his promise. Because of this, Sangcopa allegedly took his gun and shot Martinez.
The bullet hit Martinez’s eyebrow and pierced through his head.
Martinez was brought to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center for treatment but was pronounced dead an hour later.
The victim fled on board a pedicab, witnesses said.
