CEBU CITY, Philippines â€“ (UPDATE 3) What was meant to be a leisurely day on the beach ended in tragedy when a tourist bus filled with mostly Iranian nursing students fell off a ravine in the mountain village of Cebuâ€™s western town of Balamban on Sunday, killing 20, as of the latest count.

The tourist bus filled with mostly Iranian nursing and medical students from different schools in Cebu, was going downhill when it went off the road and fell down a 30-meter ravine along the portion of the Trans Central highway in Barangay Cansomoroy, some five kilometers from the town proper of Balamban.

At least 19 persons, mostly Iranian nationals, died while dozens of others were injured when a tourist bus plunged into a 30-meter ravine at past 10 a.m. Sunday while negotiating a mountain road in Balamban town.

Dr. Wyben Briones, a member of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf), who was among those who responded to the incident, told the Philippines News Agency at least 19 bodies have been retrieved from the crash site in Sitio Buli, Barangay Cansumuroy, Balamban in western Cebu.

Those injured were taken to the Balamban District Hospital.

The crash site is on the midsection of Cebu island, some 11 kilometers from the Balamban town proper.

Initial police reports said among those killed were the Filipino driver of the black and gray JD Tours bus and a tourist guide.

Police were still determining the identities of the victims.

Cansumuroy Barangay Chairman Emilia Mandocello said residents were the first to reach the crash site.

There are only two houses near the scene, also the site of many accidents in the past, she said.

Many passengers were still pinned in the wreckage of the bus which turned upside down. (PNA)

Daghan kong nadunggan in the past nga dili maayong binuhatan sa mga tawo nga maoy nakauna pag-abot sa esena sa aksidente. I hope nothing like this happened this time...

Iran consul accepts Cebu road tragedy as accident

CEBU CITY, Philippinesâ€”The top official of the Iran consulate in the Philippines will leave it to Cebu police authorities to investigate Sundayâ€™s bus crash in Balamban, Cebu that killed 21 persons and injured 30 others.

Iran Consul Mohammad Tavana, who arrived in Cebu late Sunday, has accepted that it was an accident, according to Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal Jr., owner of Cebu Doctors Hospital (CDH) where a number of the fatalities and the injured were working as medical residents.

Larrazabal, who met with Tavana Monday morning, said the consulâ€™s primary concern was to ensure that the injured, 24 of whom are confined at CDH, would receive proper medical care and that the remains of the fatalities would be brought home to Iran as soon as possible.

Larrazabal said the Iranian consul did not ask for an investigation because it was clear to him already that it was an accident.

CEBU CITYâ€”The tourist bus rented by Iranian medical students that plunged into a 30-meter ravine on Sunday had an ominous plate number: DWZ-666, the â€œNumber of the Beastâ€ in the Bibleâ€™s Book of Revelation.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but Senior Supt. Erson Digal said that the brakes apparently failed before the bus plummeted into the ravine in Balamban town, 60 kilometers outside Cebu, killing 20 Iranians and the Filipino driver and injuring 30 others.

The fatalities included ophthalmologists, radiologists, a pathologist and a surgeon, Larrazabal said. Another ophthalmologist, he said, survived the crash but lost his wife and 8-year-old son.

kon sa transcentral road kuyaw gyud tuod nang dana...

nakasuway na mig agi diha nagmotor mi backride akong misis, paingon mi unta sa 700 Steps, gabii pa pagyud...adventure lang, wa katoltol so sa Sangi, Balamban nilahos ug didto nalang mi nag pen..
....naay dulhogon diha ,nga bisag i-engine break nako sa premira plus footbreak ug handbreak dili gyud mo stop ang motor....tag-as pa gyud nag pangpang..

maybe pero ang cause sa accident kay paspas ang padagan sa bus driver nga dili mo menor inig curvada/bajada na... mao nawad-an ug control ang driver...

I happen to talk to a cebu taxi cab driver nga familiar pod sa dalan didto
ang driver sa bus is ang owner daw mismo then confident ra daw kaayo
kay bag-o ra gicheckup ang bus but ang problem is dili pa sweto sa kalsada
then dili daw pod sakto ang iya dagan og pagamit sa break mao to ni init ang break
and na rattle pod tingali to kay pwede ra man unta to niya itumba ang bus kaysa
mahagbong sa pangpang pagkawagtang sa break at least dili unta ingon ato ka
grabe ang disgrasya

How sad. Nakaagi anang dalana akong pag umangkon kay akong gipakuha sa package nga nasaag didto man nuon naabot sa balay sa akong amiga.Ang sticker man to ila gibasihan unya nabaylo pagpatapot sa taga forex. Ingon akong pag umangkon hadlok jud daw na diha nga kalsada.

Sorry to read and know about this incident. I was in Cebu/and Manila during the time that this happened.

Not just buses are a tourist transport problem here but also passenger boats as well.

Last weekend 6 youth were hospitalized after sitting on board an Ocean jet Ocea going from Cebu city to Tagbilaran Bohol, the craft when the air conditioner on boat was being repaired for two hours as they were tied up to the dock.

The crew did not administer CPR nor did they hand out water to the parched and boiling hot passengers.

The week before the engine stalled two times in the one week with the same company.

Always best to make sure that you have a an extra traveling insurance anytime you go anywhere.

21 patay jud ani tanan. Usa ra ang Filipino who is the driver ra pud. Mao na lagi gajud ni ba. Ang maaksidente sa bus kay dili ra ba lalim. Unta ug hatagan pud ug counseling ang mga nakasurvive.

This story touches me because these young students were medical students and budding doctors. I pray that they rest in peace, and that their families are comforted. A lesson to us that even medical students and doctors, who delay death's arrival, themselves, too, have to bow before the will of death. No one is immune to it.

May the Eternal Father grant them peace.
