18 boat crewmen injured in engine room explosion in Bataan
LIMAY, Bataan, Dec. 15 (PNA) -- Some 18 boat crew members were injured, eight with severe burns, in an explosion of still undetermined cause late Wednesday afternoon inside an engine room of a motor tanker docked along Manila Bay here, police reported on Thursday.
Police said the injured were first brought to the St. Michael Hospital in Orion, Bataan but later, some were transferred to the Bataan General Hospital (BGH) in Balanga City.
Left at the St. Michael Hospital were four crew members with second to third degree burns. Some others, although far from the engine room, suffered cuts and bruises from broken window glasses.
Dr. Noel Laxamana, head of BGH Emergency Room, said six were rushed to the government hospital.
“Six were rushed here where four sustained deep burns in various parts of the body while the two others have minor injuries,†he said.
“There was a big explosion. It was so sudden,†a crew with minor injuries said.
He said that he and the other crew members were at the back of motor tanker Rhea Faye when they heard the sudden explosion.
He said they were docked in the Limay waters while waiting for their turn to be loaded with oil products from an oil refinery.
Police said they were still in the process of investigation. (PNA)
