Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas has confirmed that 161 inmates of the Tacloban City Jail and Palo municipal jail escaped when super typhoon Yolanda hit Leyte on Nov. 8.
Some prisoners from two other municipal jails in Eastern Visayas also escaped, said Roxas, quoting a Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) submitted their report.
He said BJMP personnel are looking into the cases of the prisoners as authorities search for the inmates.
“We have to know what kind of crime they have committed for us to know what kind of response we will do,†he added. --
