SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique -- A total of 155 couples exchanged marriage vows in a ceremony officiated by San Jose de Buenavista Mayor Elmer Untaran on Tuesday as part of the Christmas celebrations here.

“Stay committed with each other and may your Christmas be merrier this year,” Untaran asked the newlyweds now that they are bound by their marital vows.

Remia Osorio, 56, has been with 60-year-old Adelardo Belda for the past 35 years without the sacrament of the holy matrimony.

In an interview, Osorio said she never thought that this day would come when finally they would exchange “I dos”. They had been contented with their set-up since their children are already grown-up, with their eldest at 34 years old.

But government regulations and lack of money encouraged them to finally get married.

“Our youngest though, who is 18 years old now, needs to comply with the Pantawid requirements,” she said.

She said that their youngest needs to submit her parents’ marriage certificate to comply with Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

“My husband cannot work because he is sickly and I only do laundry for our neighbors in order to earn money,” Osorio said.

She said that with their economic situation the cash grant they get from 4Ps is a big help, thus, when they heard about the free wedding to be conducted by the mayor this December they hurriedly enlisted to be among the 155 couples.

Another couple, 48-year old Danielito Deocampo and wife Geraldine Ostan, 37, said that they had been a couple for the last eight years with three children.

Danielito said that although they are also complying with the 4Ps requirement but then they are more motivated to be get married after a number of years of being married.

“I am very happy,” Danielito said.

He added that they are happy that they are also able to get a cake during their wedding which they could share with their sponsors afterwards. (PNA)
