A wage increase of P15 was approved on Tuesday by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) for minimum wage earners in Western Visayas.
During their meeting in Cebu City, the RTWPB-6 signed Wage Order No. 17 for the granting of a pay increase that will take effect on Dec. 25.
"In the spirit of Christmas, why not grant the workers an increase," Labor sector representative Wennie Sancho said.
Sancho said the issuance of a new wage order is timely because oil prices are going down, making it easier for employers to adjust to a wage increase.
The P15 increase will set the minimum wage rates in Western Visayas at P208 to P250, from only P193 to P235 under Wage Order No. 15.
Under Wage Order No. 17, non-agriculture workers will receive P240 to P250, while non-plantation and plantation agriculture workers, P208 and P218, respectively.
