1 dies, 33 hurt in 4th earthquake in Davao del Sur town

MAGSAYSAY -- A 63-year-old farmer died while 33 others were injured when a 6.9 magnitude  earthquake rocked the municipality of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur Sunday afternoon.

Fernando Balitayo was attending his farm in Purok 3, Barangay Dalawinon when the strong tremor, the epicenter of which was later traced to the neighboring Matanao town, occurred and made him rattle. While he was trying to run, he fell and suffered a heart attack.

Balitayo was rushed to a nearby hospital in Bansalan but was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.

Meanwhile, of the 33 injured victims, eight of them were hospitalized and admitted while the rest were just outpatient after being given with medical treatment. Most of them suffered contussions on their heads, arms and legs.

Most of the barangays as of this writing are waterless since water sources were severely affected by the shaking and hundreds of aftershocks.

Only few parts of the municipality were energized as the Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative is still trying to fix the collapsed electric posts.

Mayor Arthur Davin said more evacuees were brought to a relocation site in Barangay Glamang.

Davin also said that more houses were also totally destroyed by the quake.

But he still expressed optimism that his yown will eventually recover fron the wrath of the series of earthquake with the full cooperation of his people. ASA
