The Sound of Music
« on: July 13, 2012, 05:56:19 PM »
The Sound of Music
(inspired by fr chic's mention of salzburg in another thread)

the movie, oh yes, the movie.  everybody and anybody must have watched this movie sometime in their lives, at whatever age.  i first watched this on the big screen, at a time when there was no such thing as a betamax or a vhs and, who knows, perhaps the inventor of the dvd was yet to be born.

unfortunately, i guess i was able to watch only half of the movie that first time because everything was a blur; i remember breathing at asses in front of me.  it was a condition that was far from dwarfism; it's just that in that day and age, my height was was just up to an adult's ass.

that cebu movie house overflowed with people such that what parts i managed to watch i watched only when i was perched on my father's shoulders.

where i failed visually i made up for aurally.  it didn't take long to memorize all the songs, helped greatly by a local radio station that played the whole movie score everyday at the exact same time.  'edelweiss' at once became my top favorite.

i had heard of the singing von trapp family during the war, our father had declared.  it sounded so remote, so unreachable, unbelievable even.

thanks, lorenz.  it's a slow waltz or some kind of lullaby, that's why i was taken in at once.  and it's one of the first songs i learned to play on the guitar, as taught by my father.  i had to look upside down to understand his chords because he was left-handed.  :)

one my regrets.  with only three days of stay in vienna some years back, we had to forego salzburg where i wanted so much to go.  well, i hope for some other time soon.

Trivia
The making of the Sound of Music

Five months before shooting began in Salzburg, The Sound of Music director Robert Wise set out to find seven perfect children to play the Von Trapp children. He interviewed more than 200 hopefuls, including a young Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell and Mia Farrow.

In the hours before shooting, Robert cast the final members of the most popular family in cinematic history: Charmian Carr as Liesl; Nicholas Hammond as Friedrich; Heather Menzies-Urich as Louisa; Duane Chase as Kurt; Angela Cartwright as Brigitta; Debbie Turner as Marta; and Kym Karath as youngest daughter, Gretl.

Forty-five years later, some of the actors have families of their own and say they love watching the film with their children. "I think this movie is the world's best babysitter," Nicholas says. "Everybody I know has parked the kids in front of it. Three hours of dead silence."

The actors spent about nine months together while shooting, so they say they really forged a family. "We keep in touch at Christmas and the holidays," Julie says.

When Heather lost her husband, actor Robert Urich, to cancer, her Sound of Music siblings were there for her. "They all showed up," she says. "There's no DNA here, but they're a special kind of family. I'm okay, and part of the reason I'm okay is because of these guys right here."

When the cast got to Chicago for their Oprah Show taping, they all went out beforehand for a Thanksgiving dinner of sorts. "Everybody tried to catch up so fast because we knew we didn't have that long, and questions were coming from all over the place," Julie says.

"Suddenly you just revert the 45 years," Nicholas says. "We always seem to pick up the conversation where we left off, no matter what the time has been."

Thank you for this beautiful - and sentimental, too - review of this historic musical. I first saw this movie when it first came out but as a kid it was a total blur. I don't know how many people talked constantly about about the said movie and all I remember saying was 'I've seen that.' At that time I wanted to join in the discussions but couldn't... that sparked a subconscious interest of wanting to see the movie again.

To make the long storyy short it was no surprise too see myself end up buying a vcr version of said movie. This was in late 80s.

Then 1992 came when Continental awarded me a free flight to Paris. Wew! What a gift. A free flight to Europe (I just went 2 years earlier... for a pilgrimage)?!! ... but Continental told me I just can't for a week - my first request - because everything was booked for the summer. 23 days was the shortest I could spend in EU. And that was it... so we stayed longer but gave us the time to visit other places other than France.

In short, we had the opportunity to visit Fr. Aloy Cartagenas in Louvain, took a peek of Luxembourg, Netherland and old castles of Ghent, Brugge and the capital city of Brussels. Then we added Lourdes, Monte Carlo, Pisa, Rome... and from Rome we decided to skip Athens instead and went north to Vienna. We stayed in Vienna for 3 days... and decided to take a look at Salzburg even just for a day... with nothing else in mind but to experience the Sound of Music tour. And so we did! The best ever...

I accompanied my cousin who is an avid fan of this movie. She booked the trip in Salzburg and she was so excited together with Australian, Korean and US tourists. She was so amazed why I did not share her excitement, I simply said I did not saw this film but I knew the musical score, she screamed to me that I missed one-half of my life. I found it so ridiculous because I am not for such films. I will post some photos taken during the Salzburg tour. What was truly fantastic was the St Michael Church  a UNESCO World Culture heritage where they were married and  the mountains of Salzburg as background

While The Sound of Music was generally based on the first section of Maria's book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (published in 1949), there were many alterations and omissions.

1.  Maria came to the von Trapp family in 1926 as a tutor for one of the children, Maria, who was recovering from scarlet fever, not as governess to all the children.

2.  Maria and Georg married in 1927, 11 years before the family left Austria, not right before the Nazi takeover of Austria.

3.  Maria did not marry Georg von Trapp because she was in love with him. As she said in her autobiography-- Maria, she fell in love with the children at first sight, not their father. When he asked her to marry him, she was not sure if she should abandon her religious calling but was advised by the nuns to do God's will and marry Georg. "I really and truly was not in love. I liked him but didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children.  . . . By and by I learned to love him more than I have ever loved before or after."

4.  There were 10, not 7 von Trapp children.

(The youngest three were the children of Maria and Georg von Trapp.)

5.  The names, ages, and sexes of the children were changed.

Though the von Trapp family did have seven children, the show changed all their names and even their genders. Rupert, the eldest child, responded to the often-asked tourist question, "Which one are you?" with a simple, "I'm Liesl!" (http://www.ricksteves.com/)

6.  The family was musically inclined before Maria arrived, but she did teach them to sing madrigals.

7.  Georg, far from being the detached, cold-blooded patriarch of the family who disapproved of music, as portrayed in the first half of The Sound of Music, was actually a gentle, warmhearted parent who enjoyed musical activities with his family. While this change in his character might have made for a better story in emphasizing Maria's healing effect on the von Trapps, it distressed his family greatly.

9.  The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom in Switzerland, carrying their suitcases and musical instruments. As daughter Maria said in a 2003 interview printed in Opera News, "We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing."

The movie scene showing them climbing into Switzerland was actually filmed near Berchtesgaden, Germany...home to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, and certainly not a smart place to flee to. (http://www.ricksteves.com/)

9.  The von Trapps traveled to Italy, not Switzerland. Georg was born in Zadar (now in Croatia), which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Zadar became part of Italy in 1920, and Georg was thus an Italian citizen, and his wife and children as well. The family had a contract with an American booking agent when they left Austria. They contacted the agent from Italy and requested fare to America.

10.  Instead of the fictional Max Detweiler, pushy music promoter, the von Trapps' priest, the Reverend Franz Wasner, acted as their musical director for over 20 years.

11.  Though she was a caring and loving person, Maria wasn't always as sweet as the fictional Maria. She tended to erupt in angry outbursts consisting of yelling, throwing things, and slamming doors. Her feelings would immediately be relieved and good humor restored, while other family members, particularly her husband, found it less easy to recover.

In her 2003 interview, the younger Maria confirmed that her stepmother "had a terrible temper. . . . And from one moment to the next, you didn't know what hit her. We were not used to this. But we took it like a thunderstorm that would pass, because the next minute she could be very nice."

If you blinked during the "I Have Confidence" scene—when Maria is leaving the convent for the Von Trapp home—you may have missed a very special extra. The real Maria von Trapp, her daughter and granddaughter appear for a split second in the background.

However dissipated I appeared, I was obviously presentable enough for one person who had arrived out of the blue—the real Baroness von Trapp—the actual Maria, a jolly, chortling frau of ample proportions who could not have hidden her oversized shoes under any convent bed in Europe and escape detection.

The baroness did not exactly boost my confidence by informing me how much more handsome I was than her husband. My God! What could he have looked like?! But she was very bouncy and bossy, laughed a lot and really was most likable.

Incongruously for an ex-nun, she was an expert channel swimmer, a prizewinning world-class champion, in fact. All at once she announced in booming tones that she couldn't stay with us very long and I imagined that yet another channel somewhere was already bracing itself for her plunge.

The baroness remained long enough to watch Julie and me shoot our first meeting in that glorious mirrored room, which had been a part of the great Max Reinhardt's old mansion on the outskirts of town. To see this buxom, bovine Maria gazing at the other Maria—her slim, trim alter ego—was quite uncanny.

-Christopher Plummer on the real Maria von Trapp, in his book In Spite of Myself

In short, we had the opportunity to visit Fr. Aloy Cartagenas in Louvain, took a peek of Luxembourg, Netherland and old castles of Ghent, Brugge and the capital city of Brussels. Then we added Lourdes, Monte Carlo, Pisa, Rome... and from Rome we decided to skip Athens instead and went north to Vienna.

skipping athens?  sayang.  well, greece will be there for another day.

OT: my sister was shocked when i told her about fr aloy cartagenas.  she never knew.  what i know is that she'll always take fr aloy's side.

What a wonderful personal anecdote ! :)
