Highlights of the International Shipmodelling Days 2022 (4)
The display of the modelling club MBF Tornesch on deck 4 was without a doubt a nice place to make a stop during the show. MFB stands for „Modellbaufreunde“, „modelling friends“, and this kind of describes the relaxed attitudes of the members of this club. Located around the town of Tornesch to the North-West of Hamburg, they are a group of modelers and friends that meet regularly. They have no strict rules when it comes to what modelling subjects or technics the members should focus on. Despite that, most of the members do build ship models and most of them are RC (radio controlled). They organise irregularly meetings at the Rosarium lake in the neighboring town of Uetersen to sail their models on the water. For the Shipmodelling Days, their ships and boats had to stay dry, but that does not mean that thy could not amaze us all with their high quality and diversity.
This container ship built by Hendrik Wesel specially caught our eye. It is built from scratch in a scale of 1:100 ans it includes all functions one may imagine. 164 cm long and 27 cm wide, it weights over 24 kg, depending on the cargo Hendrik decides to load it with. Originally, it was going to be a model of the Contship Germany, Built by the Vulkan shipyard in Bremen 1992. The ship was specially famous for her original pink paint. Hendrik eventually decided that the modifications he made during the construction had pushed the ship away from the original and decided to rename the model Contship Max. The ship had a top capacity to transport 1800 TEU (standard containers), and Hendrick has built up to 350 to show on his model. Ge also have an alternative deck showing the ship transporting military equipment.
The Contship Germany belonged to the shipping company Contship that was created in 1969 just as the containerisation started to take hold of the shipping industry. The company existed until 2005 when it became integrated in the company Hapag-Lloyd. The Contship Italia Group still exists independently nowadays. The Contship Germany was sold in 1998. She served until 2019, when she was scrapped in Xinhui, Guangdong, China.
