SM Mall of Asia


MANILA – Five malls in the Philippines made it to the list of 50 “coolest” malls in the world compiled by an international lifestyle website.

Complex.com, the online counterpart of the American men’s magazine Complex, ranked different malls across the globe based on the quality of stores, amusement attractions, and ambience.

SM Mall of Asia was the highest ranked Philippine mall on the list, coming in at No. 15.

“When it comes to the SM Mall of Asia, shopping is secondary to everything else the sprawling 4.2 million square feet mall has to offer. Four buildings are interconnected by walkways, but we recommend you ditch the Main Mall and head to the Entertainment Mall, where all the fun is,” the website said, citing attractions such as the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX theater and the Director's Club Theater “for more intimate screenings and a selection of 30 cozy La-Z-Boys.”

“After a few hours in your chair, you can lace up your ice skates and try not to fall on the Olympic-sized ice rink, or nerd out in the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center with 11 themed rooms with names like Grossology and Spaceship Earth,” it added.

Two other SM malls are on the list, which was dominated by malls in the United States. SM Megamall was ranked at No. 18, followed by SM City North EDSA at No. 19.

“If you find yourself in the Philippines, you may need to reserve an entire week to visit each of the country's three SM supermalls, though the SM Megamall might be the craziest: it's spread out over 44 acres, with over 750 stores from brands like Polo to local designers,” Complex.com said of the Ortigas Center mall.

“Need a visual to help you understand how much space this is? Imagine approximately 33 football fields of shopping mall stacked 6 stories high, all with original, empire-like stores with names like Toy Kingdom and Cyberzone. Aside from the more predictable cinema, which houses 12 theaters, go check out the Chapel of Eucharistic Lord, tucked away on the fifth floor. Because after you've spent all you cash, what else can you do but pray?” it said.

The website, meanwhile, dubbed SM City North EDSA “the grandaddy of malls in the Philippines,” having opened in 1985.

Greenbelt in Makati came in at No. 34, which the website praised as “a lush center with over seven acres of dewey greenery under an open sky.”

"The view is nice from the outdoors, but the indoor shopping will tempt you inside, with stores like Louis Vuitton, Hérmes and Balenciaga making it worth your time...and obviously your money,” it said.

A surprise entry on the list is Festival Mall in Alabang, which came in higher than Greenbelt at No. 33.

“Festival Mall has theme parks, as in more than four different kinds. Aside from the massive Ace Hardware and Handyman stores, the shopping here is just all right. What's great, though, is your ability cross off everything on your ‘fun’ to-do list in one trip: go bowling, see a movie, shoot some pool, ride a roller coaster, sing some karaoke and/or play some bingo. It's like the adult equivalent of Chuck E. Cheese's and Six Flags smashed into one. And with a recent expansion proposal given the green light, expect an additional 600 shops and 74 acres of themed fun in the coming years,” it said.

In a statement about its inclusion in the list, Festival Supermall announced it will be building an additional 110,000 square meters for stores and restaurants, highlighted by River Park, a 2,518-sq.m. natural feature slated to be the mall’s centerpiece already under construction and is set to open in November.

River Park will include dining outlets with an amphitheater, water gardens and a 1.5-kilometer “live creek” surrounding the mall.

“River Park will add a new dimension in family dining. It boasts of a lush natural gardens and the live creek,” George Domingo business development head of Filinvest Alabang, Inc. said in the statement “Imagine dining in such a lovely space.”

Change is also underway for the existing mall as it undergoes a facelift slated to begin this month and to be completed by the first quarter of 2014, it added.

Topping the list of coolest malls in the world is the $20-billion Dubai Mall. China's Golden Resources in Beijing came in at No. 2, while Canada's West Edmonton Mall was third.

Mall of the Emirates in Dubai and Istinye Park in Istanbul, Turkey rounded up the top five.
