Berlin's annual Festival of Lights, which sees many of the city's iconic buildings illuminated with various light displays, kicked off on Friday.
However, the 18th iteration of the festival is a bit different than the previous ones. Europe's ongoing energy crisis and calls to reduce energy consumption have forced the festival's organizers to scale down the size of the festival, including fewer venues, shorter durations for the light spectacles, and the use of more energy-efficient lighting. The aim is to use 75% less electricity than the year before.
The festival, whose motto this year is "Visions of our Future" and goes until October 16, wasn't celebrated among all, with some wondering whether such an event is prudent during an energy crisis.
