MANILA, Philippines - Contrary to certain sectors' claims, it is not too late to heed Catholic bishops' call to change government because of corruption, an opposition senator said Thursday.
In a radio interview, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said that while the bishops' call would have counted more had they made it much earlier, its recent appeal for a change in government is still timely since the issue of corruption is a "continuing offense."
"Noon siguro hinihintay ang kanilang pahayag na mas matapang yan inaasahan ng tao noon. Pero corruption ang issue dito, corruption is a continuing phenomenon. Hindi pa rin huli, timely pa rin iyan (People would have wanted the bishops to make such a bold call before. But this is an issue of corruption, which is a continuing phenomenon. So it's not too late. The call is still timely)," Lacson said in an interview on dzXL radio.
Earlier this week, five senior bishops, including Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines president Angel Lagdameo, called for a change in government as they scored the problem of corruption.
The call drew the ire of Malacañang and some business groups.
On the other hand, Tagbilaran, Bohol bishop Leonardo Medroso said it is high time for people to act and for the Arroyo government to be held accountable for charges of graft.
"What the Church can do is just to knock on the consciences of corrupt politicians but actions rely most from the public," he said in an article posted early Thursday on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website. - GMANews.TV
