A leftist rebel will get 120,000 pesos (2,500 U.S. dollars) as a reward from the Philippine government if he abandons his rebellion life and surrenders his M-16 assault rifle, a government official said on Sunday.
Of the total, 50,000 pesos (1,040 dollars) is for the M-16 assault rifle, a common firearm of the New People's Army, said Hermogenes Esperon, presidential peace adviser of the Philippines.
The other 70,000 pesos (1,460) will be provided as livelihood assistance for each of the guerillas who return to the fold of the law.
"The amount is more than enough for a former rebel to start his or her own small business," the former military chief said in a statement.
On the other hand, the Philippine military has vowed to defeat the leftist rebels before 2010 as ordered by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), with some 5,400 guerrilla fighters throughout the country. -
