Malunggay or "Moringa oleifera" is Signature Vegetable
« on: December 09, 2008, 07:11:15 PM »
The city government of Dagupan will make the nutritious "malunggay" (Moringa oleifera) as a signature vegetable, and effect its entry in the One Town, One Product (OTOP) concept.

Dagupan City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina said the city near the sea has a very marginal soil best suited for the planting of malunggay.

Molina said malunggay is called a wonder vegetable because of its high nutritional content.

The city’s marginal soil is not suitable for rice farming but only for vegetable gardening.

Dagupan has only 219 hectares devoted to rice farming, all of which are rain-fed.

Molina has asked City Councilor Alfredo Quinto Sr. to sponsor a resolution in the city council seeking to make malunggay planting a must in all households to provide every family source of nutritious food.

Quinto said the leaves of malunggay can be dried under the shade and pulverized to be mixed into any food, like table salt.

The leaves are the most nutritious part of malunggay, although its fruit (pod), seeds and flowers are also edible.

Molina spoke to newsmen during a break at a seminar on organic farming sponsored by her office, the Department of Agriculture and the City Waste Management Office on Tuesday. - PNA

projects like this should be done all over the country. malunggay is very easy to grow, doesn't require too much caring for, and can be planted just abouot anywhere. paging the DA people and MAOs in the municipal level.

Kamunggay is a proven leafy vegetable that could lower cholesterol level.  We are abundant with humble but highly nutritious plants like saluyot, talbos kamote, and bago.

grazie, if your malunggay do survive the winter, then you can probably start growing a small plantation in your backyard and supply local grocery stores in areas that have a sizable number of filipino consumers.

bolingitboy, that's a good suggestion but I don't think we can grow enough in our property to supply the demand of the Pinoy stores here.  For now, it gives us pleasure that we can share our harvest to our friends here. Mahal ra ba daw na kamunggay sa Pinoy stores dire.  Pila lang ka palwa 3 dollars na.

Ang kamunggay pwede ibuwad ug dukdokon nga pino. Unya isalgul sa mainit nga tubig sa tasa. Butangan ug kunting asukal and the preparation could now be drunk like coffee or malunggay coffee. Pwede sab puston ang ground malunggay dry leaves sa gasa bag. Then dip the malunggay bag into a cupful of hotwater. This preparation could now be drunk like a tea or tsa.

Oh, that's a good idea, A Layman!  Next year, if we have enough harvest, I will dry some kamunggay then I will put it in an empty capsule casing so I can consume more without tasting it.

Bai Cal, ngkabuang ko ug search kay huna huna ra man to nako galabon. Mao ni nakuha naho. Tinuod man diay nga pwede iprepare ning dahon ug bunga when fresh or can be preserved as powder as food supplement.

MALUNGGAY

The Malunggay (Sajina, Moringa) tree.

 MORINGA, MALUNGGAY, SAJINA
Moringa is the English name. It is called Malunggay in Philippines and Sajina in Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. It grows very wildly in hot tropical climate.

Moringa is a wonderful herb known all over the world-- but only recently in the U.S. It may provide the boost in energy, nutrition and health youíve been seeking.  This book reveals Moringaís nutritional content, medicinal properties, where to get it, the best results.

Moringa is a remarkable discovery, which can make a tremendous difference in your health and quality of life.  Mounting scientific evidence shows what has been known for thousands of years by people in the tropical parts of the world: Moringa is natureís medicine cabinet.

It is best known as an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster.  Loaded with nutrients, vitamins and amino acids, it replenishes your body and provides what you need to get through a hectic weekday or active weekend.

As the candles multiply on top of your birthday cake, you may find yourself slowing down and saying, ìI just donít feel eighteen any more.î  Moringa gives back some of the energy you thought was lost.

Yet this is not a sugar-based energy.  Itís not something, which makes you hyper for some period of intense activity then leaves you drained.  In fact, Moringa is also relaxing...it helps to reduce blood pressure and assure a good nightís sleep.  How does it contribute more energy and greater relaxation at the same time?

The answer seems to be Moringaís well-documented detoxifying effect.  University laboratories around the world have studied Moringaís ability to purify water...attaching itself to harmful material and bacteria, and allowing them to be expelled as waste.  The evidence points to this same process going on inside your body.

It produces long-lasting energy without hyperactivity... a nerve system at rest... a blood system not under pressure...a gland and hormone system in balance.

Other health benefits identified by people who use Moringa continue this same pattern: immune system strengthened, skin condition restored, blood pressure controlled, headaches and migraines handled, diabetes sugar level managed, inflammations and arthritis pains reduced, tumors restricted and ulcers healed.

A body that ís not fighting damaging internal elements is better able to use the nutrients, which come into it to build healthy skin, bone and muscles, as well as the all-important hormones, which keep your body in balance.

And Moringa is loaded with nutrients.  Each ounce of Moringa contains seven times the Vitamin C found in oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, three times the iron of spinach, four times as much calcium as milk and three times the potassium of bananas.

One of the best attributes of Moringa is that it is also quite tasty and a welcome addition to your kitchen.  The leaves, pods and flowers of this versatile tree are all edible, each with its own flavor.  They can be served fresh with meals, or be reduced to powder and used as a food supplement.

Bitaw daw, ang bunga sa Kamunggay daghan pod ug benefits.

Those bad effects are inherent in all foods and medicines when used improperly. Correct dosage has to be followed to achieve the positive results effectively.

DA, NAPC promote widespread growing of lowly malunggay

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) are taking the lead in promoting the widespread cultivation of the lowly malunggay, saying the tree’s leaves, seeds, and fruits have significant amounts of Vitamin A and C, potassium, calcium, protein, and other micronutrients demanded by the cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.

Dr. Alicia Ilaga, head of the DA’s biotechnology program, explained that the tree, known scientifically as moringa oleifera lamk, contains 700 percent more than the Vitamin C in oranges, 400 percent higher than the Vitamin A in carrots, twice the protein, and four times the calcium found in milk, and thrice the potassium in bananas.

Secretary Domingo Panganiban of the NAPC has also implemented a program to encourage marginalized residents of communities in the 10 poorest provinces in the country to plant malunggay, a hardy tree that grows even in nearly arid climate and favors volcanic soil.

So significant is malunggay as a food substance for many Filipinos that its leaves have replaced other vegetables in traditional viands.

Ilaga said malunggay’s seeds, pods, and other parts are significant sources of nutrients and even oil, stressing that 40 percent of the seeds is oil that can be used for water purification and massage since it has anti-oxidant properties. It is also appropriate for cooking.

The seeds can be used for the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, gout, cramps, boils, urinary problems, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Malunggay seeds can be harvested every six months, according to experts from the University of the Philippines in Los Banos (UPLB).

Malunggay oil has a maximum shelf life of five years, Ilaga said.

What makes the tree significant for Panganiban is that it can generate as many as 10,000 jobs for every 3,000 hectares, and farmers can earn between R218,000 and R521,000 for every hectare and even more if the seeds fetch prices higher than R20 per kilo.

There may also be other uses of malunggay, said Ilaga, as she has urged government to conduct a comprehensive study on the impact of the lowly malunggay on the campaign to reduce malnutrition and increase the incomes of farmers who would cultivate the hardy tree and supply local and foreign corporations with natural ingredients that have significant cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

Malunggay, known in England as moringa and in India as sajina, has been found by biochemists and molecular anthropologists as rich in vitamins C and A, iron, and high density lipoprotein (HDL) known in medical literature as good cholesterol, according to Ilaga.

MALUNGGAY: Tea and Capsule
Available in Tea and Capsules: box of 20's and bottle of 50's
Gone are the days when the lowly malunggay is not appreciated by many Filipinos and is  remembered only as an important ingredient for soup to be given to mothers who has just given birth to their baby.

malunggay has been developed to become a good number of food products para it will become more palatable given the natural bitter taste of this leaf: malunggay flour (which is made into various bakery products), malunggay noodles, malunggay tea, etc... speaking of malunggay tea, i think present processors of this leaf are doing an overkill in the pricing of malungay-based products. a box of malunggay tea of 20 sachets costs php 168.00. given the easy availability of malunggay in any given part of the country, it seems preposterous that malunggay tea can cost that much even if it was already processed.

Pwede sad siguro tamnan tanang menteryo ug kamunggay kay manambok man sila. Himoon na lang ni sila ug powder aron madilute ang mga micro organisms o bacteria gikan sa mga decomposed bodies.
