Philippine Agriculture Needs Rescue
« on: October 01, 2007, 07:16:42 PM »
Senator Edgardo Angara is calling on the government and agriculture stakeholders to implement drastic measures for Philippine agriculture which contributes hugely to the national economy.

Angara made the call during his recent visit here to speak in the two-day 2007 Agri-Summit, sponsored by the Iloilo Business Club.

Angara, Senate committee chairperson on agriculture, said even though agriculture contributes about one fifth to the national income and ultimately to the economy, every body still looks down on agriculture.

“It is the foundation of the economy of every progressive country like Japan, Taiwan, and China, but it attracts the least public investment here,” he expressed.

He likened the said sector to a “step child” because of the low priority given to it, instead of being the country’s “first born”, the Philippines being predominantly agricultural.

The senator pointed out that come 2010, there will be 100 million Filipinos, and by 2015, the population is expected to balloon to 120 million.

“We need a big amount of food to feed all those people,” Angara said.
