Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona says “Bar Ops,†as well as the traditional “Hatid†and “Salubong†may no longer be allowed next year.
Speaking to reporters, Corona said that such activities being held during four consecutive Sundays of September were actually not being done in the past.
“If I were the only one to decide, I will ban that ‘Hatid’ and ‘Salubong.’ We should just let the barristers enter and exit (the Bar exam venue)… It’s one of the things I would like this committee to consider. So will we stop it right now? I cannot say at the moment,†Corona said.
Bar Ops is described as the extending of support of law schools and law students to their alumni who are taking the Bar examinations.
On the other hand, during the Salubong, law students of various law schools gather outside the DLSU to show support for their colleagues who have completed the Bar exams.
Barristers are usually greeted by their schools, relatives and friends with flowers, drums, food and drinks.
Corona disclosed that the 2011 Bar examinations will no longer be held at the DLSU after the latter refused to renew its contract.
“Even before the (2010) Bar exams started, La Salle already told us they do not want to renew,†Corona said.
He said the venue for next year’s Bar examinations is still being determined although there are already suggestions to hold it at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) along España, Manila or at the Adamson University on Taft Avenue, Manila.
Corona said that under the Rules of Court, the Bar examinations should be held in Manila.
