Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The Philippine ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya said that a Kuwaiti firm had violated Manila's ban on the deployment of workers to war-torn Iraq and recruited 867 Filipinos for deployment to Baghdad.

Endaya said the First Kuwaiti General Trading and Contracting Co., hired the Filipinos and deployed them to work in 17 worksites across Iraq. He said the number include 247 Filipinos working in the so-called Green Zone where the U.S. embassy is under construction.

According to the Philippine envoy, 11 Filipinos working in the U.S. embassy construction in Baghdad were recruited by First Kuwaiti as well as hundreds of Filipinos now working in Iraq. Worst, the Kuwaiti firm is said to be continuously recruiting Filipinos to work in the volatile region in violation of the existing ban.

"We do not have any way of knowing whether they were under coercion or under intimidation when they gave those kinds of statements," Endaya said.

The Philippine government enforced a travel ban to Iraq following the abduction of two Filipino truck drivers by Iraqi militants. Manila also recalled its military contingent to Iraq after the Filipinos were released by their captors.
