De Castro awaiting orders to help sentenced OFW in Kuwait
« on: April 02, 2008, 05:07:36 PM »
MANILA, Philippines -- Vice President Noli de Castro said he is awaiting instructions from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on the government's next move in its bid to save the life of Filipino worker May Vecina, who is facing the death sentence in Kuwait.

De Castro, who is also presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers, said he is willing to fly to Kuwait to personally appeal the case of Vecina, whose death sentence for the murder of her employer’s child was affirmed by the Middle East state’s supreme court.

Vecina was convicted of murder and two counts of frustrated murder and was sentenced to hang for killing Salem Sulaiman Al-Otaib on January 6 last year, and for attempting to kill his 13-year-old brother Abdulla, who throat was slit, and 17-year-old sister Hajer, reports said.

In a separate interview, deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez said the government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, is doing everything to save the life of the 28-year-old worker.

But he said he has yet to find out if Arroyo has written the Kuwaiti emir a letter of appeal to reverse the death verdict.

In December, Kuwait's emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah commuted the death sentence of Filipino worker Marilou Ranario to life imprisonment after a personal visit by Arroyo to the Gulf state.

Ranario, a teacher from Surigao who went to Kuwait to work as domestic helper, was sentenced to hang in 2005 for killing her 46-year-old female employer, who she said had insulted her and her country.
