Philippines - Former President Corazon Aquino is suffering from cancer, her daughter and actress Kris Aquino confirmed on Monday.

In a press conference in Quezon City, the younger Aquino said tests confirmed that her mother is suffering from colon cancer and asked for prayers as the former president battled the illness.

Kris said that after experiencing high blood pressure, difficulty of breathing and notable loss of weight, the former president recently decided to undergo medical checkup which confirmed her ailment.

"Our mother had suffered from an episode of high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing followed by fever during the week in between Christmas and New Year. Since that time, we became concerned because of her consistent cough, loss of appetite and noticeable weight loss.

"Our mom wanted to know what was wrong with her, and with her family by her side, she submitted herself to a check-up and several tests. The results showed that our mother is suffering cancer of the colon," the younger Aquino read from a statement.

Kris said it was her mother's decision for the family to release a statement regarding her health condition.

"Desisyon po ng nanay namin na mag-release kami ng statement, para maunawaan ng lahat ang kanyang kasalukuyang kalagayan. Nakikiusap po kami na sana maintindihan ninyo na kailangan ng aming ina, kagaya ng lahat ng pasyenteng nagpapagaling, ng panahon ng katahimikan," said Kris, who became emotional while reading the statement.

She added that aside from prayers for the former president's recovery, the family is also asking for the public and the media to respect Mrs Aquino's privacy.

"It's a very difficult time for our family, most especially for our mother. We respectfully ask that she be accorded her privacy.

"Our mom remains a believer in the power of prayer. We ask for your compassion and for your prayers for our mother's recovery," the younger Aquino said.

The former president is a vocal critic of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and in fact twice called for Mrs Arroyo's resignation over corruption allegations in her administration. Mrs Aquino also accompanied ZTE deal probe witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr in some of his public appearances exposing corruption in government.

To recall, Mrs Aquino was confined on Christmas eve at the Medical City in Pasig for high fever. - GMANews.TV
