Biotechnology in the Philippines: Answer to Food Crisis
« on: November 27, 2008, 03:38:02 PM »
Biotechnology can serve as the country's lifebuoy from the current global economic turmoil as many farms have adopted biotechnology while some technologies are just waiting for commercialization, agriculture experts said.

"Biotechnology is the key to national progress," Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap said during the 4th National Biotechnology Week held at the UP Institute of Small-Scale Industries in Diliman, Quezon City.

Any technique that uses living things to make or modify a product, to improve plants and animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses falls under the general category of "biotechnology".

Biotechnology holds a great deal of promise in the fields of food production, agriculture, medicine and environmental management.

National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban concurred, saying that biotechnology can help address hunger and malnutrition.

"It can usher the Philippines to a new economic phase through safe, simple and cost-effective agricultural biotechnology," Panganiban said.

As NAPC chief, he is mandated to implement anti-hunger and anti-poverty campaigns and is coordinating all efforts by various departments and agencies to battle misery and pain in both rural and urban areas.

Meanwhile, Yap revealed that up to P1.3 billion would be used by the government for hard projects in agriculture -- meaning irrigation projects, farm-to-market roads and the likes -- to improve rice production and the cultivation of other crops. - PNA

Biotechnology is the way to go. Such a field is a growing one here in these United States.

Am glad to hear that the sentiment is alive in the Philippines.

Progressive thinking.

Day kana bio-ecology. This biotechnology is a very suspicious term. There are lots of gen manipulated crops. Their negative effects is not yet known, but they are well propagated now thru the aggressive campaign of Monsanto. Third world is the target to alleviate the poverty, the chance of DNA mutation is there.

That is an example of biotechnology. I have colleagues who are Engineering Students in the prestigious Drexell University College of Engineering--who are working in their Masters in Mechanical and Biomechanical Engineering. And their project---which is rather expansive---is working with the environmental department in Pennsylvania and the goal is to converting the landfills in nearby Upper Darby region of Philadelphia as a way to emit gas power--and power a shopping plaza district.

They have already tested it small scale, and it worked. The key now, which is what makes an Engineer an Engineer, is converting the entire landfill and tapping it for gas power.

This is an example of Biotechnology--and specifically, the Engineering that is involved.
In their research team, there are also PhD docotral students in Molecular Bio, Environmental Conservation and Architecture, not to mention hordes of Engineering students.

This is what I call Biotechnology in a TEAM approach.

This is what I call progressive implementation.

The Philippines is looking at alternative renewable resources and I hope more of this continues and propagates throughout the archipelago.

sige, ipa promote gyud nang pagpananum ug jatropha sa bohol para kung magkuwang na ang yuta para tamnan ug humay ug mais, pwede na nilang kitkiton ang jatropha.

sakto ka bolingitboy!

mao bitaw toy usa sa mga causes ngano nagrice crisis last year tungod sa conversion of agri lands to industrial and commercial uses.

and i remember! murag nay loophole and ato agrarian law: the option of big landowners to convert their agri lands to industrial and commercial uses para ma-exempt sa coverage sa CARP. ahak!!!

GENUINE LAND REFORM!

mao gyud cals. pero that can only be applicable to areas nga medyo duol pa sa mga established commercials centers. it's fairly difficult to convert a huge agri land into industrial if it's located in the boondocks. klaro na na kaayo nga gihimo lang na excuse to keep their land intact. still, dili gyud perfect and ato agrarian law... back to biotechnology, i don't think planting crops for biofuel production in bohol will do any good for the province being a rice producing area. concentrate na lang gyud ta sa rice production. let marginal areas where corn will not even grow be planted to these crops instead.

sounds good cals. i'll check it out next time i'm in town. the best gyud ang organic rice and i wish more people would start eating it so that a new market will open and farmers will realize and work to fill it... there are so many establishments everywhere - bohol included - that sell lechon manok. this does not even include the chicken that jollibee and mcdonalds serve. but they are all using broilers which are heavily-laden with antibiotics and who-knows-what-else. why hasn't anyone thought of opening a chicken restaurant that serves nothing but native/free-range chicken? it's not only a healthy alternative, it is also a novelty and being so might be good business strategy

ang organic rice pa jud bolingitboy kay dili giniling sa mga galingan diha kay mawa ang nutrients kung commercial nga galingan gamiton.
