Proper Surnames for a Married Woman in the PhilippinesExample: Josefa Reyes married Renato Cruz. Josefa may use any of the following names:
a. Josefa Reyes Cruz
b. Josefa Cruz
c. Mrs. Renato Cruz
Note: She cannot use Mrs. Josefa Cruz for this would be illegal and ungrammatical, the term "Mrs." being the abbreviation of "Mistress." While she is the mistress of Renato, she is NOT the mistress of Josefa. However, if she wants to, she may still use Mrs. Josefa Cruz provided that "Mrs." is enclosed in parenthesis. She would then be using the form in Article 370 (No. 2) of the Civil Code of the Philippines and the term "Mrs." which should be enclosed would be merely descriptive of her marital status.
