The year was 2006, an October. Minimum wage in Davao was P7,500 per month. I wasn't a college graduate.
I was having an early morning interview for an online job after an acquaintance referred me to the position. Interviewer was based in the US.
After being able to satisfactorily answer the interviewer's questions regarding the work (with the help of my acquaintance who was chatting with me in another chat box), it was time to ask me the $$$ question.
Interviewer: So how much are you expecting to earn from this position?
Me to Acquaintance: Nagtatanong na po siya kung magkano ineexpect ko na sweldo. Ano po sasagutin ko?
Acquiantance: Sabihin mo $400-$500
(Back then, $1 = P50. So that's roughly P20,000 - P25,000. So syempre, nashock ang lola niyo.)
Me: Sure ba po yan?
A: Just type it.
And so I did. What happened next came more of a shock to me.
Me to Interviewer: $400 to $500
I: Okay, let's make it $450.
Is this for real? Yung puso ko tumalon-talon sa saya. Oh my god!
And in my pajamas, at 6:00 in the morning, pumunta ako sa isang internet cafe para mag-aral ng mabilisan ng kailangan kong aralin.
Imagine, back then, wala akong alam. Buti may kakilala ako to coach me on what to say.
