Reports of dengue in Jagna are slowing down. Either the outbreak is finished or cases are brought to other places for medication. Since dengue is a disease that may blow up to epidemic proportions, epidemiologist would try to locate the source of the cases so they would not spread. The outbreak could not have started here spontaneously; it should have been brought from out of town. It would not be surprising if dengue would strike Jagna since this is a port town and transients may bring any communicable disease. Or it might be that since Jagna has a district hospital, cases from neighboring towns are brought here for treatment.

Dengue carriers are mosquitoes, specifically the aedes egypti. We have been living with them ever since. If they are not infected, the only results of their bites are itchy spots. This is because they inject non-coagulant saliva so the insect could ingest blood easier. However, if the mosquito is infected, the dengue virus, germ or whatever is the form, is injected along with the saliva. Since medical authorities have not yet recommended a dengue vaccine, the only preventive measure is to kill the carrier, the dengue mosquito.

Information states that the aedes egypti is a mosquito with white markings. As the name implies, this insect could had came from Egypt. How it came to the Philippines and eventually to Jagna is a mystery. It could had stowed away in a plane or a ship or whatever mode of transportation. It is said that only the female bite and they could not propagate until they ingest blood. They bite only on certain hours of the day and go to sleep at night. Other mosquitoes bite only at night, while still others offer day and night services. The aedes egypti operate at all times of the day; that means twenty-four hours, thus spreading the disease full time states the recent information.

Perhaps the cause of all the troubles is Noah. He was not discriminating. He took things literally. When God ordered him to take a pair of all His creatures into the ark before the deluge, he took the mosquitoes, flies, fleas, bedbugs, ticks and other pests along with the rest. When the rains stopped, they landed in Mt. Ararat in what is now Turkey It was Noah who bade them to go to the world and multiply.

They did not only multiply. They multiplied, divided and exponentiated that they grew in arithmetic or geometric proportions - whichever is bigger - until they outnumbered the humans millions to one. Had Noah refused the aforementioned pests boarding passes, there should had been no Pampangueños selling mosquito nets to the people of Jagna and eventually getting married here.

Since not everyone can afford mosquito nets to sleep inside during the night or wear one during day or burn katol around the vicinity, the only option is to destroy their breeding places. Tin cans, turned up coconut shells, banana and gabi leaves and whatever objects can contain liquid abound in backyards. To eliminate all clear and stagnant water is a problem. We could go thirsty or stink, so we cover all water containers. Sometimes fogging operations is carried out but they do not guarantee death of all mosquitoes. The most effective form of killing mosquitoes is two blocks of wood, iron, concrete or any hard objects. Induce to mosquito to sit on one block and hit it hard with the other.

The rains had barely started here. The coming may generate plenty of stagnant water. Since it is hard to isolate disease-carrying mosquitoes, the infected person has to be isolated. If it is inevitable that a patient is to be bitten by a mosquito, authorities has to be sure that the insect is not an aedes egypti.
