This coastal municipality which experienced earthquakes in the past is bracing for another occurrence of the calamity of this nature in an effort to minimize if not prevent damage to lives and property.
An earthquake drill was held last week in response to calls made by the
National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC). The municipal counterpart is chaired by Mayor Exuperio Lloren.
It may be recalled that the NDCC through the office of the governor sent a memorandum-circular to the local executives enjoining the 2007 3rd nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill on Oct. 10.
Mayor Lloren officially tasked Eli Doria, Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC) as deputized coordinator to conduct the tremor exercises to coincide the ASEAN Day. In this connection, all local disaster coordinating councils government agencies, public and private schools were involved to undergo similar activity as stated in the nationally circularized memo.
At the start of the disaster rehearsal, the MDCC in charge gave some instructions to the participants especially on the steps to be observed in the practice. Doria emphasized first and foremost the safety measures to be carefully taken in the activity.
At the stroke of three in the afternoon training day, a siren made an alarming one minute sound signaling the occurrence of the shaking incident. In the municipal hall and nearby national, provincial and local offices and surrounding schools, people in their usual activity quickly moved out while the rest took cover under the tables and desks for few minutes. After the supposed terrible moment, the supposed victims were carried by the rescuers to the safe place. Those at the outdoors were head counted.
