Last Sunday there was an accident. A gaffed cock hit a man. The wound must have hit a major blood vessel because the bleeding was strong. The victim was brought to the hospital but the doctor could have only tied off the severed blood vessel since there are no operating facilities and sent the man to Tagbilaran where his vein or artery could be rejoined. If there had been no first aid performed on the man he could have bled to death before he was transported.

While safety rules in a cock derby are followed, they are not imposed in Sunday bouts. During derbies, the only persons allowed in the fenced area are the official handlers, one for each cock; the referee and the authorized house bet caller, he who places bets uncovered by the major bettors or the masa. If the remaining bets are not covered, they offer odds, which gradually rise until they are accepted.

The bout starts with the handlers making their charges peck at each other to rouse their fighting fury, bare the gaffs and places the cocks on the starting line at the same time. If the fight does not start immediately, they perform the routine all over again. Once the fight starts, the handlers leave the rueda or the fenced arena and come back only to pick up the contestants.

Sometimes, those rules are waived if the cock owners are so influential with the management that they stay in the rueda until the particular bout is over. In this case, if an accident happens during the fight, the victim cannot sue the management since he entered the rueda at his own risk. In Sunday fights, those rules are more honored in breach than in observance as the trite saying goes.

Cock fanciers sometimes mistake temperament with gameness. A mean tempered cock is expected never to run away from the enemy even at the point of death. This is far from true. Man fighters had been observed running away from the fight.

Neither is temper a sign Cock fanciers sometimes mistake temperament with gameness. A mean tempered cock is expected never to run away from the enemy even at the point of death. This is far from true. Man fighters had been observed running away from the fight. Neither is temper an mdication of fighting ability. Vicious cocks can also be mediocre combatants.

Being in the arena with a heeled cock with a bared gaff is dangerous. Sometimes, even the most even-tempered rooster will take on anyone during the battle fury.

The worst are the man fighters. They will hit anybody even without provocation.

They refuse to be handled by anyone. Experienced handlers only pick them up by the back feathers while distracted. Disaster awaits those who pick them up by the tail.

Those with severe hypertension and heart trouble should never enter a cocking arena. They may suffer strokes or heart attacks during the heat of the fight.

Several deaths had been recorded caused by the excitement. While accidents may be prevented by prohibiting incompetents from handling gaffed fighters, the management has no way of banning those who has such ailment. It would be ironic if the owner would die before his contestant.
