Miss Blue,
Of course it does not mean that other professions are any less than the ones that I listed; the three that I listed were in my view, the ones necessary for societal function.
Education is prime. Always. It is the duty and role of the teacher, professor, instructor to educate students in their respective fields to mold and train future technocrats into their respective professions/strengths in society. The teacher's responsibility is to create doctors, nurses, engineers, dentists, pilots, construction workers, artisans, etc out of the mass of children/ students. Education, in my point of view will always be the core profession of any society. The teacher is the molder of societal basis: the individual. The future of any society and the direction it marches toward is transcendental on the finances to provide education, educational facilities, and resources.
Medicine/Nursing is second because it is the role of the Physician and Nurse to heal and repair the workers of the system (society) and to get them back into tip-top shape (he he he) so that they can go back to their roles/professions and maintain easy/smooth transition. The role of the physician/nurse is to care for the health of the entire society, assess any viral outbreaks, treat any debilitating diseases that can be pivotal and catastrophic to the financial arm of the nation (by harming and ailing the working class/ the proletariat). Then of course there are tertiary members of the greater arm that is Medicine;--the allied health workers that collaborate in expediating the role of the physician in treating the health of the nation/society.
Engineering. Engineering because it is one of the ancient of professions. The bridges, streets, houses, skyscrapers, underground structures, railroads, airports, ships, tankers, oil rigs, etc. All the structures that facilitate and expediate the exchange of communication, economic trade, military movability, medical availability etc and educational transferability all depend on the Engineers and the construction workers that are supervised by the engineers. The Engineers are the maintainers, the stewards of a nation's infrastructure. Society will not work without the presence of skilled, educated, and hardened Engineers. The Engineer's role and importance is invaluable. His is the role of maintenance, and projecting communication, trade, military fastidiousness.
Everything else such as; The Arts are beautifications. It beautifies society, for the mental and psychological well-being of the inhabitants.
One could say: a Symbiotic Relationship.
