The difference between the three medical fields is that the M.D physician is a contemporary physician that relies in traditional medical dogma, with great emphasis in the treatment of bodily ailments via the use of surgical treatments: invasive or non-invasive, as well as proper drug-assisted healing (prescription, radiology etc).
The D.O physician and his schooling is almost identical to that of the M.D physician, however the main difference is that the D.O is also trained to utilize osteopathic muscular manipulation, which is a semester based course to teach them the functions and modality of the different bones of the body. There is great emphasis in spinal manipulation, as with traditional medical dogma in this practice. The reason why there was a split between D.O and M.D is that D.Os believe that the body needs to be healed as a whole unit, and that drugs alone cannot be the only recourse to healing, but also mind and soul etc----this is a huge topic that has been widely debated by the medical community.
The DPM physician is a doctor of podiatry, and he is responsible for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower extremity (anything below the knee and hips). Treatment varies from nail removal, sulcus removal, bone reformation, amputation etc. He has the power within the law and power vested in him to provide care to patients with foot problems via the use of prescription drugs, surgical procedure or even manipulation.

Other health care providers that are outside this scope include: chiropractors, faith healers, naturapathic healers, herbal healers etc; and are not recognized by the health insurance community---as they do not have the power to provide and give medical prescription or perform surgery.
