Learning Spanish: Online Lesson
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:50:45 AM »
This thread will be for the purposes of learning and understanding the basics of the Spanish language. Topics that can be covered are: sentence formation, basic phrases, past, present and future tenses, pronunciation (i will upload videos vis-a-vis youtube to demonstrate).

Please, feel free to learn with us. The language of Spain is truly a beautiful language, one of the core Romance languages, and a full understanding of Spanish will give you a general understanding of Italian, French, and Romanian, as well as Latin.

Gracias por ensamblar. Deje los estudios comenzar!

Dong unsa man ang:

I AM FINE?----

You can say: Yo estoy muy bien; estoy muy bien (I am very well)
or you can say Yo estoy bien (im fine, im good)

or

I would personally say:

Gracias mi amigo, yo estoy muy bien todo, gracias por su preocupación para mi.

Como Esta Usted - How Are You?

Yes! Correct! And an answer can be:

Yo estoy muy bien : im very well
Yo estoy muy mal : im not well

The key to this is the term 'yo' which is objective first person, and the word 'Estar', which can change to
'estoy, esta, estan, estamas' depending on the subject.

If you are referring to 'we' then you would use 'estamos'
If referring to a person then you would use 'esta, estan'
or
If you are referring to first person objective , you would use 'Estoy'

Spanish is a very easy language to learn.

The Consonants
« Reply #8 on: February 03, 2008, 04:15:42 PM »
The Consonants

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2NYhkUhQHg

     C, at least in most of Latin America, is pronounced like the "c" in "cereal" when it comes before an e or an i, and like the "c" in "car" when it is other positions. Examples: complacer, hacer, ácido, carro, acabar, crimen. Note: Although you will be understood if you use the Latin American pronunciation, in parts of Spain the c sounds like the "th" in "thin" when it comes before an e or i.

     CH is pronounced the same as the "ch" in "church." Examples: chico, machismo, Chile.

     F is pronounced like the "f" in "fox." Examples: eficaz, frío, frenes.

     K has basically the same sound in Spanish, although somewhat softer. It is found primarily in words of foreign origin. Examples: kilómetro, Irak.

     M is pronounced like the "m" in "mother." Examples: madre, música, embajada.

     P is pronounced like the "p" in "spot." Note that the "p" in "spot" is softer and less explosive than the "p" in "pot." Examples: papas, padre, suponer.

     Q is pronounced the same as the k. Note that the u following a q is not pronounced. Examples: quetzal, siquiatra, que.

     S is pronounced like the "s" in "simple." You do not give it the "z" sound heard in "wears" and many other English plural words, although it can be slightly voiced (like a soft "z") when it comes before an m, b, d, v, g, l, n or r. Examples: Susana, seres humanos, sencillo, fantasma.

    T is pronounced like the "t" in "stop." Note that the "t" of "stop" is softer and less explosive than the "t" of "top." Examples: todo, yate, temer.

     W is pronounced like the "w" in "water." It is found primarily in words of foreign origin. Examples: kilowatt, Zimbabwe.

     Y is generally pronounced the same as in English.

Difficult Consonants

The differences between the sounds of these consonants and their English counterparts in the following examples. Note also that these pronunciations are a guide only, as there are many subtle variations that can vary with locality.

     B and V are pronounced exactly the same. In fact, one of the few spelling problems that many Spanish speakers have is with these two letters, because they don't distinguish them at all from their sound. Generally, the b and v are pronounced like the "b" in "beach." When either of the letters is between two vowels, the sound is formed kind of like the English "v," except that the sound is made by touching the lips together instead of the upper teeth and lower lip. Examples: bebé, árbol, vaca.

     D generally is pronounced somewhat like the "d" in "diet," although often the tongue touches the bottom of the teeth instead of the top. But when d comes between vowels, it has a much softer sound, kind of like the "th" in "that." Examples: derecho, helado, diablo.

     G is pronounced much like the English "g" in "go," except when it precedes an i or e. In those cases, it is pronounced like the Spanish j. Examples: gordo, gritar, gigante, mágico.

     H is always silent. Examples: hermano, hacer, deshacer.

     J (and the g when before an e or i) can be difficult, as its sound, that of the German ch, is absent in English except for a few foreign words where it is sometimes retained, as in the final sound of loch or the initial sound of Channukah. The sound is sometimes described as a heavily aspirated "h," made by expelling air between the back of the tongue and the soft palate. If you can't pronounce it well, you'll be understood by using the "h" sound of "house," but it's worthwhile to work on the correct pronunciation. Examples: garaje, juego, jardín.

     L is always pronounced like the first "l" in "little," never like the second one. Examples: los, helado, pastel.

     LL is usually pronounced like the "y" in "yellow." There are some regional variations, however. In parts of Spain it has the sound of the "ll" in "million," and in parts of Argentina it has the "zh" sound of "azure." Examples: llama, calle, caballo.

     N usually has the sound of the "n" in "nice." If it is followed by a b, v, f or p, it has the sound of "m" in "empathy." Examples: no, en, en vez de, andar.

     Ã‘ is pronounced like the "ny" in "canyon." Examples: ñoño, cañón, campaña.

     R and RR are formed by a flap of the tongue against the roof of the mouth, or a trill.

     X varies in sound, depending on the origin of the word. It is often pronounced like the "x" in "example" or "exit," but it also may be pronounced like the s or the Spanish j. In words of Mayan origin it can even have the English "sh" sound. Examples: éxito, experiencia, México, Xela.

     Z generally sounds like the "s" in "simple." In Spain it is often pronounced like the "th" in "thin." Examples: zeta, zorro, vez.

For the time being, please try to practice the pronunciation of Spanish consonants. The following is a poem that should be perfect for students. Try reading this poem over and over again, try to develop the accent, which I will provide through a video. Practice, practice, and practice some more; I assure all of you, you will develop the Hispanidad in no time

 No me preguntes si te amo,
porque esa pregunta me ofende,
si pudiera colocar moneda sobre moneda
para hacer una torre de todo lo que siento,
créeme llegaría hasta el cielo.

Te amo mujer,
amo tu historia,
amo tu vida,
y amo tu paz,
inclusive me gusta verte estornudar,

It would be written as : Buenos dias mis amigos.
Remark: Since the subject, amigas y amigos, is addressed, then we will pluralize the inclusive "mi" to "mis". If you were to address only a singular term such as 'amigo' then the inclusive would be "mi" instead of "mis". Additionally, since you are addressing both males and females; it is generally acceptable to use the pluralized masculine form of the subject(s), which in this case is "Amigas y amigos" = "Amigos"

Como Esta?
Muy bien?

My response to that would be:

Yo estoy estudio para el examincion por mi clase Biologia. Estoy asi-asi, y tu?
(I am studying for my examination for my Biology class; feeling alright, yourself?)

Buenos Dias, Sra. Orchids!

'You' in Spanish is 'Tu'

I'll give you an example.

English: Where are you from?

Spanish: De donde eres tu? (transliteration is: of where are you)

Another example;

English: My name is Brando Lorenzo Lucino and I'm from the Philippine Islands, but I've lived in the United States for 17 years. What about you? Have you been in North America for a long time? Yes?

Spanish: Me llamo Brando Lorenzo Lucino y yo donde Las Islas Filipinas pero yo vivo en Los Estados Unidos por diez y siete anos y tu?  tu vivaste en Norte-America por muchos anos? Si?

Ate, you don't give yourself credit. Bisaya has a lot of Spanish loan words baya and the numbers in Bisaya is Hispano-influenced.

Usa- Uno
Duha- Dos
Tulu- Tres

etc, etc,

Actually, it is very easy for a Filipino to learn Spanish because both languages have been mingled already. Spain too benefited from the Filipino.

An example is the dish called 'Adobo'. The dish is popular in Latin American and in Spain, but did you know that Adobo was originally of a Filipino dish? It was imported to Nueva Espana (Mexico) during the 16th century, there it adopted latin flavors such as the use of black beans, black pepper, etc, but the original dish was of Filipino origin. A clearly Malay dish.

Adobo is the most popular dish in the Latin World, including in Spain. Not many know that it was originally Filipino, then later 'Latinized'.

(I am studying for my examination for my Biology class; feeling alright, yourself?)

salamat dongBran, nakapatik na sa akong ulo ning Buenos dias mis amigos
mao na akong isulat permi sa multiply
makasabot ko gamay apan maglisod nako ug sulat
just like "Yo estoy estudio para el examincion por mi clase Biologia"

ako ra dli kalimtan numero pod hehehe

Aduy, you can still learn it, my friend.

I took 4 years in high school and 3 years of advanced Spanish in college as electives. It's not too bad. The Spanish language is very easy to learn, its conjugation, tenses (past, present, future) objectives and subjectives are quite simplistic, compared to say, English and or Russian (considering a different writing system-cyrillic)

If you are Filipino, learning Spanish should be quick. There are already spanish words, and tenses that have been amalgamated in Bisaya and Tagalog.

Per se, such terms:

1. Cada semana
2. limpio
3. quarto
4. numerical systems
5. tinidor
6. cuchillo (pronounced in the castilian dialect as coo chill yo)

etc etc etc,

Si! Si! Nosotros vamanos! Nosotros estudiamos Espanol! Claro que si? 8)

An examplary form of Spanish literature is in poetic form.

The best example is Dr. Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios.

This rendition is read by yours truly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HveVx1eiOB4&feature=channel_page

Adios, Patria adorada, region del sol querida,
Perla del Mar de Oriente, nuestro perdido Eden!
A darte voy alegre la triste mustia vida,
Y fuera más brillante más fresca, más florida,
Tambien por tí la diera, la diera por tu bien.

En campos de batalla, luchando con delirio
Otros te dan sus vidas sin dudas, sin pesar;
El sitio nada importa, ciprés, laurel ó lirio,
Cadalso ó campo abierto, combate ó cruel martirio,
Lo mismo es si lo piden la patria y el hogar.

Yo muero cuando veo que el cielo se colora
Y al fin anuncia el día trás lóbrego capuz;

Deja á la luna verme con luz tranquila y suave;

Por nuestras pobres madres que gimen su amargura;

Aroma, luz, colores, rumor, canto, gemido
Constante repitiendo la esencia de mi fé.

Mi Patria idolatrada, dolor de mis dolores,
Querida Filipinas, oye el postrer adios.
Ahi te dejo todo, mis padres, mis amores.
Voy donde no hay esclavos, verdugos ni opresores,
Donde la fé no mata, donde el que reyna es Dios.

Adios, padres y hermanos, trozos del alma mía,
Amigos de la infancia en el perdido hogar,
Dad gracias que descanso del fatigoso día;
Adios, dulce extrangera, mi amiga, mi alegria,
Adios, queridos séres morir es descansar.

We need to know first that in the spanish language, there are 'Ir, 'Ar, and 'Er    ending words.

An example of an Ir word is : Escribir, Traducir,
An example of an Ar word is: Exemplar, Bailar
An example of an Er word is: Comer, Volver

OKAY! So please note that there are many different types of words but follow the ending.
I will provide a list of such words in regards to IR, ER, AR endings, but that will be a topic for a different day.

Just remember the differences. Okay? As it is a necessity in indicative and subjective tenses.

Present Indicative Tense:

Remember that there are different indicatives: referring to self, to a person, to a group, etc.

Remember:

Yo = referring to self
Tu = referring to 'you'
El/ Ella/ Usted = referrng to 'him, 'her, 'them} respectively
Nosotros = referring to 'we'
Vosotros (vosotras) = referring to second person plural form
Ustedes/ ellos/ ellas = referring to the plural form of 'him, 'her, and 'them } respectively

The endings for 'Ar words include:

Yo= o
Tu = as
Ello/Ella/ Usted = a
Nosotros = amos
vosotros = ais
ellos/ellas/ ustedes = an

The ending for 'Er words Include:
Yo = o
Tu = es
Ello/ella/usted = e
Nosotros = emos
Vosotros = eis
Ellos/ ellas/ ustedes = en

The ending for 'Ir words include:
Yo =o
Tu= es
Ello/ ella/ usted =e
nosotros =imos
vosotros = is
ellos/ellas/ ustedes =en

So an example of the endings.

So for the tensing of 'Bailar':

Yo bailo
Tu bailas
Ello baila, Ella baila, Usted baila
Nosotros bailamos
Vosotros bailais
Ellos bailan, ellas bailan, ustedes bailan.

Follow the said rules that I posted regarding words that end in 'Er and 'Ir.

Okay? So try it out!

Well both those, bem, are in the present indicatives regarding 'self'.

Main difference is that deso is the personal indicative of the word Desear, which means : To wish, and or desire

The present indicative verb, "quiero" stems back from the word Querer, which means:
To Love.

An example of sentence formation involving the two said verbs:

It should be reinstated as a language, considering Spanish is a major language spoken abroad. Spanish is one of the major languages in Europe, let alone in South, Central and North America.

Spanish is becoming a 2nd language here in the U.S. It is a required course in public schools (starting from elementary to high school).

Admittingly, Spanish is a fairly easy language to learn. Its based on the Latin phonetics, and tensing (past, present, future) are similar to all Romance languages (Latin, French, Italian, Romanian, Spanish).

If you can master English, which is one of the hardest languages to learn, then you can easily master Spanish.

Let us learn.

Senor Julio,

gracias por contestar a mis preguntas. Si, se placia tambien muy considerar la victoria de Pacquiao contra Hatton. El machisimo y la tenacidad filipinos del filipino es muy evidentes. Por supuesto!

Sr. Julio, soy un estudiante de medicina. Apenas un estudiante medio.

Senor, su espanol es excelente! Yo saludo!
