Despite the so many
medications already available, the
Iloilo local folks have come up with some alternative herbal medicines to help cure dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is caused by
mosquito predators especially during the rainy days.
One of the most common herbal medicines they have discovered is the weed called as tawa-tawa in
Western Visayas or gatas-gatas in Luzon area.
The decoction of the boiled tawa-tawa leaves is believed to increase the body fluids, which is commonly lost if the patient has dengue fever.
Others are using the nymph tree by burning the leaves. The smoke from the said tree is a good
mosquito repellant.
Aside from these, there are also a few flowers and trees that are used as mosquito repellents.
These include pine, cedar trees and geraniums, daisies and chrysanthemums.
In fact, a very powerful commercial insecticide called pyrethrum is made from a member of the daisy family called Chrysanthemum cineranifolium.
However, the Iloilo Provincial Agriculture through Provincial Agriculturist Ildefonso Toledo does not recommend drinking this herbal medicine since there was no research or study yet being conducted by the Department of Health (DOH) or any health institution.
Although, Toledo stressed that some of those victims who tried drinking this boiled tawa-tawa confirmed that it helped them recover, there is no sure-fire guarantee on its efficacy.
