The Lungays, particularly the family of UP-educated Ma'am Nene Borja Lungay, are respected artists in Bohol. Ma'am Nene graduated with honors at the UP College of Fine Arts. Ka-batch niya ang national artist in visual arts nga si Jose Joya. Her children include Nelia (painter, sculptor and women's rights advocate) and Europe-based Gene . Another guy, Brydon, is a kayak maker. That's sculpture, too, with fiberglass as medium. I am certain that Fr. Chicogon and these Lungays are very much related as their roots are in Catigbian and Balilihan.

In 2006, Boholano Palanca award winner and La Salle professor Marjorie Evasco (of Maribojoc) authored â€œAni: The Life and Art of Hermogena Borja Lungay, Boholano Painterâ€. The book is beautifully reviewed by Flaudette May V. Datuin (â€œBlossoms of Wisdom from a Turtle-Shaped Islandâ€) in Ctrl + Pdf (Journal of Contemporary Art). I had the privilege of attending the launching of the book at MetroCentre in Tagbilaran. How our eyes welled when it was time for Maâ€™am Nene to speak on her experiences as a mother, wife and artist.

Excerpts from Datuinâ€™s review:

(In) . . . her home-island of Bohol, . . . (Lungay) is â€œcommitted to the lifelong practice of her art. She is of Bohol, in spirit and soul. This keen sense of place is not mere context for her art; it is the heart-source from which her visual imagination draws its living waters.â€

A strong presence in Bohol today, Lungay is role model to new generations of Boholano artists. In her workshops, she not only teaches technique on how to paint well, but also how to live well. In one telling incident that took place in a gathering of Visayan artists, she sent a strong message: artists must learn how to strike a balance â€œbetween the need to survive in the world and the desire to serve oneâ€™s art.â€ When a male artist admonished young participants that â€œthey shouldnâ€™t get stuck with painting flowers and fruits,â€ the kind which collectors prefer, she countered: â€œDo not forget how to paint your flowers and fruits. These will help you survive in the world. But take care to paint each one very well.â€

Ni try kog paint after Hurricane Katrina to keep my sanity... pero kataw-anan man. I thought I know how to do it but I can't put my hand to it yet. Dia pa sud sa imagination, di pa kagawas ngadtos kamos hahahaha!

Di pa ko makatubag ana in detail, but allegedly he transferred all parish funds amounting to about 600,000 pesos (as told by many) to his personal bank account.

Balik ta ni Gene, what I appreciate in him is he continues to paint images of Bohol, like children playing local games, even while he's already based in Europe. Such subjects create curiosity among the viewers who eventually buy his works because of the cultural value that they possess.
