Hydrocephaly (ancephaly) during intrauterine growth is due to polyhydramnios of the placenta; which is a result of of neural tube defects and or Trisomy. The reason for the manifest of hydrocephaly is because there was insuficiency or deficiency of neural crest cells in migration of the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain of the pharyngeal arches during embryonic development.

As a result of this, the fetus was unable to take in amniotic fluid, therefore it leads to Polyhadramnions (which is when the amniotic volume within the placenta is over 1500-2000ml) This is unatural since there should be around 800-1000 ml of volume in the placenta.

Co-indicative of hydrocephaly are:
a) Neural Tube Defects
b) Large amniotic fluid; Polyhydramnios
c) High alpha-feto protein within the mother's blood stream

One can see this as manifest in Ultrasound, or after amniocentesis.

Since polyhyadramnios and subesequent development of ancephaly (hydrocephaly) is the result of failure to or insufficient migration of neural crest cells--resulting in neural tube defect--by right, there will be neurological abnormalities in the fetus.

Patients who are born with said conditions have mental abilities that are under par compared to children who were born with no hyadramnio-complications.

The physiology of this is straightforward. Excess water in the cerebrospinal region will result in water entering sensitive regions; particularly the dura mater, arachnoid, subarachnoid space, pia mater and the cortical regions.

Any damage or defect in the cortical regions and surrounding glial cells will result in a manifest of neurological defects. To which will manifest upon the maturation of said child.

Looking at this picture, I am impressed at the pediatric orthopaedic surgeon's ability in mending what was once unmendable.

The child looks like he is happy, and that is the most important thing. The reconstructive operation will help in giving this smiling and happy little boy a chance of having a normal and happy life.

This is caused by chromosomal non-disjunction. These cases are rare in developed nations because of the technology (per se ultrasound, sonography, amniocentesis, and other invasive procedures) in detecting this and applying treatment intrauterine.

Ancephaly and its forms are common in poorer and developing countries such as China, Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico, etc because of the sparsity of medical treatment; and the cost of medical treatment.

Luuy lang pood bitaw ang mga babies that are born with hydrocephaly. Many of whom have a 25% chance of surviving. This child was one of the lucky ones. Luuy pood ang bata.

This child had a problem during inter-uterine growth, an over-excessive amount of neural crest cells migrating into the superior cranial structure, leading to the maldevelopment of the neurocranium. From looking at this picture of the child, it lookslike defintely overcalcificaiton (hypercalctonemia) also took place to harden the neurocranium. With this, it could have led to the constriction of brain growth, most notably the cerebrum (specifically the cerebral cortex). Which is the site for intellectual growth, memory, understanding etc.

Usually, tho te, in instances of neural tube defects, this leads to maldevelopment of the facial structure as well as associated neural structures, which can be associated (depending on the level of severity) to mental retardation, growth impedeiment (ieg, deficiency of the pituitary gland--will cause cretinism etc), as well as cardiac anomalies.

Even if the child in this particular example might have some kind of retardation of mental growth, so long as there are facilities and educational systems that can facilitate his/her role society and acquirement of skills, a good and substantial life can still be attained.

This is why we are stressed to tell the patients when dealing with pregnancy cases to always tell the mother (expectant) to have and undergo prenatal diagnostic screening as well as genetic testing / analysis for the chances/likelihood of having problems.

So one can make an informed decision.

This child is beautiful. The smile on his face; money cannot buy a smile like that.

Even with his physical problems, he still finds joy.

For a man who was in his 30+, for him to say such and tease kids (we were preschoolers then) was unbecoming.

Here in the United States and im sure in many western countries, dili man i point out ang flaws sa mga tawo; as such can warrant a man to be liable under court for harassment charges.

If physical deformity was such a barrier to success; then I dare to remind that there are men such as renowned physicist Stephen Hawkings.
