Message: DO YOU REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH IN THE WORLD TODAY?

AS A MATTER OF FACT By Sara Soliven De Guzman
> The Philippine Star 04/30/2007

> Filipino people love their country, love their culture and take pride in their language. This is not to say that
even if the English language is used in Philippine schools, we have already disrespected and have ignored our national language.

> A minority faction is continuing to fight for the use of our native language in schools. They are blocking
the implementation of Executive Order 210 (series 2003) which is "Establishing the Policy to
Strengthen English as a Second Language in the Educational System." They claim
that the EO allegedly deceives the public in its content and that it is more directed toward establishing the
English language as the primary language and not as a secondary language to be used as a medium in
schools. Then, they say that the EO contradicts our Constitution. So what do they really want? Do they have
intentions of helping our country progress or do they want us to continue
being primitive and backward.

> Don't they realize that we already have an edge over other Asian nations and the rest of the world in speaking
the English language? In fact, even if India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab
Emirates, etc. speak English, they carry a strong accent which makes it difficult for people to follow. So, the
way Filipinos speak English is better understood and this is why many international companies prefer to hire Filipinos. Why do you think we have so many OFWs around the world? Yes, even the Filipinos who live far in the bundoks land a job abroad. Now don't tell us that English in the Philippines belongs only to a small population and that those from the
provinces do not use it.

> Do you realize that many of the textbooks used in public and private schools are donated from abroad? They
are all written in English. In fact, the books or textbooks written in  English are the ones used in the schools and public libraries. They are professionally written, meeting international standards and are far off better than the ones made locally. For your information, the books used in the provinces and hard to reach areas are the ones donated by foreigners. Even
books published in the 1960s written in English are still welcomed by our local folks. I should know, schools are close to my heart - both public and private. I have visited private and public schools around the country - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao even those in far to reach areas. They all have more books written in English than in their native dialects (of which they have almost none existing at all) or in Filipino. So, do your research before objecting to something that can make or
break our country.

> When the Aquino Government imposed the use of the Filipino language or the regional languages in schools (circa
1988), our literacy rate tremendously dropped. I think their intent was to strengthen national pride - little did
they know that patriotism or love for country was very strong in the hearts of the Filipinos during that time. As a
result, the program to implement the use of the national language confused the schools as to how this was going to be achieved with the very little materials on hand. School heads, teachers and students were like headless chickens following something which had such weak foundations and preparations especially since the teachers have not mastered Filipino in its real or purest form. So, Taglish evolved. Thus, the birth a new informal language. It is only now that we are
starting to recover because many are now conscious of the importance and the advantages of the English language.
Many schools, public or private alike have realized that English is the only way to move forward.

> The British Council says "English is the main language of books, newspapers, airports and air-traffic control,
international business and academic conferences, science, technology, diplomacy, sport, international
competitions, pop music and advertising. Over two-thirds of the world's scientists read in English.
Three quarters of the world's mail is written in English. Eighty percent of the world's electronically stored
information is in English. Of the estimated forty million users of the Internet, some eighty percent communicate in English, but this is expected to decrease to forty percent as speakers of other languages get
online."

> In 1919, US President Woodrow Wilson had the Treaty of Versailles (which ended the First World War between Germany and the Allies) written in English as well as French. Since then, English has taken root in diplomacy and gradually in economic relations and the media. The language now seems set to have a monopoly as the worldwide medium
of communication.

> Today, economic globalization is growing hand in hand with the growing use of English. People are being encouraged
to use or send messages in English rather than in their own language. Many do not mind. They see this as part of the unavoidable trend towards worldwide uniformity and a means whereby a growing number of people can communicate directly with each other.

> As Roland J. Breton, a geo-linguist from the University of Paris states: "The spread of English may be
seen as a positive development which saves resources and makes cultural exchange easier. After all, it might be
said, the advance of English is not aimed at killing off local languages but is simply a means of reaching a wider audience... A person makes a mark through his or her ability to use the most useful language or languages. And
over several generations, the most useful language eliminates the others."

> Our country is already in a chaotic situation - from the problem of illiteracy, unemployment, the spoils of public office, bureaucracy, political or extra-judicial killings, corruption to the coming May 14 elections - let us not confuse it all the more. Instead, we must put all our energies on the more practical solutions in order to see a brighter future for our nation.
Do not forget that the country's growing prosperity and commercial aggressiveness are due to the extended
use of the English language by our countrymen.

Finding the Joy of Teaching in Thailand…

GERALDINE GULLE DARAY PUGOY
By Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao – Gabin
(FOR SUNDAY POST. Sunday, November 12, 2006 issue. Thank you very much!)

Reporting back to the office after the May 1 fiesta could be very tiring. Tagbilaranons, especially those who make it a point to prepare gastronomic treats for the visitors or fiesta goers, would rather take a few days off from the office to relish the time to stay home to rest or simply be with their families. However, in May 2005, it was rather exciting for me, after Lawrence L. Medilo, our systems administrator, handed me a print-out of the e-mail from a certain “Gege Pugoy.” She started her message by saying that she got my name from the City Government of Tagbilaran website. She introduced herself as a Boholana working as an English (English as a Foreign Language) teacher in Thailand.

Geraldine “Gege” Gulle Daray Pugoy was practically a stranger to me, but it was flattering to have received an e-mail from somebody I didn’t know. I was even more interested when she told me she hopes I could help her with her project: as part of their school’s English curriculum, she, together with four (4) other teachers, will be bringing to Bohol 10 students from the Kanlayaneesithammarat (KN) School in Nakhonsrithammarat, one of the provinces in Thailand, our ASEAN neighbor known for many years as “Siam.” (In the 20th century, the country changed its name to “Thailand” meaning “land of the free people.”) I was told that a significant component of the youth exchange program was that 10 students and 5 teachers from Holy Spirit School will also be given the chance to do the same program for two (2) weeks in Thailand, with free accommodation from host families.

After getting the approval of Sister Mary Joy B. Quizan, SSpS, Holy Spirit School director and exchanging e-mails from May till the last week of September 2005, Gege and I (thinking primarily of the PAASCU accreditation) were ready for the Thailand - Philippines - Holy Spirit School Youth Exchange Program from October 9 to 22, 2005. Mrs. Virgilia A. Fudolig, HS principal, student leaders led by Lyn Limboy, Jean Joan S. Ibba and Chryst Dalumbar (Gege’s Boholano colleagues in Thailand) and I went to the Tagbilaran City Airport last October 9 to welcome the group composed of Mayuree Karikarn, English program director, Usa Siwamok, KN School director, Booncherd Pimsen, assistant director, Scottish teacher John Andrew “Geordie” Robson with his wife Big, and the students Natawan Tirakijpanichakorn, Praew Siripasert, Sumukal Pleangrat, Chayanis Suddhavichai, Vanidcha Mahattanan, Araya Thongsame, Naruporn Noo-Samien, Phattaraporn Potjanametha, Yawaree Pantaweesak and Phattaraporn Phithakham. (Part of the beautiful friendship forged between HSS and KNS was the pioneering sisterhood covenant signed by Sister Joy, school director and Mayuree, KN School English program director which stated that the same number of HSS teachers and students will have the experience of culture in Thailand, as they did in January this year (the same time Lola Pining got really sick and died).

Gege told me that Kanlayaneesithammarat School is a large government school situated in the center of the city of Nakhonsrithammarat, Southern Thailand, with a student population of 3,500, with ages ranging from 11to18 years old. The KN English Program (EP) is housed in a separate building, home to an estimated 250 fee-paying students who are taught some of their subjects in the English language. The EP students are taught by qualified and experienced Western and Asian teachers and are also given the opportunity to do many interesting activities including having to go to several English Camps to Malaysia, Singapore and other Asian countries each year. Last year, their trip was different as the students from Grades 9 and 10 attended classes and stayed with host families, with the objective of providing them with learning experiences that foster insights, cultural appreciation, and meaningful friendships.

Ajarn (Teacher) Gege, the school’s English camp organizer, born on November 23, 1975 in Sierra-Bullones, is the eldest child of Zosimo Atup Daray (deceased) and Norma Nituda Gulle of Cogtong, Candijay, Bohol. She was valedictorian when she finished elementary at Cogtong Elementary School and high school at Bohol School of Fisheries (now Central Visayas State College of Agriculture, Forestry and Technology – Candijay Campus) and was conferred the “Most Outstanding Student” award during her college graduation at Agusan Institute of Technology, Butuan City.

As mother to three (3)-year-old son Verm Gerald Pugoy, she takes the pleasure of having to shuffle motherhood and a full-time career, with very little time left for sleep. “The reason I like living here in Nakhon so much is that it's a great town. It's not too big and yet big enough to have what you need on a daily basis. It's also close to mountains, beaches, waterfalls and islands, so it's a great location… I'll tell you this (Thailand) is a very nice country - food, clothes and almost everything are super cheap!” Having lived in Thailand for the past 11 years, together with her husband, Vernizo Piloton Pugoy, a seafarer turned ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, she feels like it’s her second home, having gotten used to its diverse culture and background, the usual Thai diet consisting of rice and fish prepared with curry and sauce, with the abundance of tropical fruits such as bananas, durian, jackfruits, mangoes and mangosteen.

Gege worked in Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Prachinburi and in 2000, started teaching at the KNEP. “I feel very fortunate to be part of this English Program and have and still am thoroughly enjoying myself here. The reasons I have enjoyed my stay so much are varied; my fellow staff members, very helpful colleagues and above all, excellent students. The students always make me feel good even when I'm feeling low ... their intelligence, sense of humor and their general outlook in life makes it a pleasure to come to school. I feel truly honored to be the one teaching them,” she shares.

Her other inclinations are reading, traveling, languages, fashion and bright colors. Actively involved as adviser of the Filipino Association in the South of Thailand (FAST), she also takes pride being the writer and producer of the ‘The Best English Radio Show in the South of Thailand’ as she beams “ I am so proud to be the one in-charge of this program.”
Gege, like her husband Verni, my Boholano friends and teacher-Friendster buddies Purissa Buaya Plaras (Carmen), Chryst Dalumbar, Diana Lyn Leopando de Castro and John Jasper Castillo Cortes (Tagbilaran City), Michael Ortega Ligalig (Anda), Prince Paul and Roseth Ranara, and even international dancesport champions Jonathan Cajes Reyson (Tagbilaran City and Talibon) and Cherrel Justiniani Deiparine (Inabanga) may be far away from home, but they certainly have found success and the joy of working in Thailand.
.
According to Gege, “I really believe that poverty is not a hindrance to success. I was born and raised in a poor family, but I don’t find it a problem in getting what I’ve wanted in life. Instead, I always consider it as a challenge. With confidence in myself and the blessings from up above, I was able to achieve what I’ve dreamt of… What goes around, comes around, and so forth. I believe that with life, you get what you put into it. You don’t try to have a good life, and you don’t try to have a bad life; you just let your life follow its own path and just be who you are.” (FAEAG)

Tagbilaran beauties in retrospect
By Jefilo Rewinantclacoe

There may have been beauty tilts earlier that were not properly documented, so the personalities may have slipped from our memory …

Over the years, it may have been known by different titles such as Miss Tagbilaran, Tagbilaran’s Five Prettiest, Miss Teen Tagbilaran, Mutya sa Tagbilaran or Miss Young Tagbilaran, even spanning the terms of former City Mayors Venancio Pahang Inting, Rolando Gatal Butalid, Jose Ma. Fama Rocha, Jose Valles Torralba and now Mayor Dan Neri Lim and handled by the City Government of Tagbilaran, Leo Club of Tagbilaran, Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees or Pastillas Jaycees, but just the same, these beauty pageants never fail to catch the fancy of the people who have an eye for pulchritude.

Through the years, as Tagbilaran has metamorphosed into a city with big dreams, we also recall the ladies who were privileged to be its ambassadors of goodwill, who have successfully represented Tagbilaran in higher levels of competitions, or have helped in promoting the best assets of the City by serving as role models of the youth.

After more than four (4) fruitful decades, the City has grown by leaps and bounds, so has beauty pageants. It’s not just about the face and figure, poise and bearing, talent and intelligence or that “thing’ they call x-factor. Beauty pageants have evolved, have gone beyond simply looking at the physical attributes of each candidate, but most importantly, it has given the definition of “beauty with a purpose.” So, what has become of our former titleholders?

In April 1986, Zosita Caliao Clarin (married to Godofredo Manigque; as a mother, Suzette has raised four lovely children, the eldest “Margo,” destined to become Miss Tagbilaran exactly 20 years after her own victory) was crowned Miss Tagbilaran in the pageant sponsored by the Leo Club of Tagbilaran. Three months after that, the City Government of Tagbilaran organized the 1986 Tagbilaran’s Five Prettiest and proclaimed Elisa Pusta Laway (now with the audit division of the Holy Name University Finance Office), Gemma Marina Reyes Manding (a Philippine Airlines flight attendant for almost two decades), Ma. Josefina Mabilog Manigque (a businesswoman in Bacolod), Helena Monton (a nurse in London) and Leah Vita Castaño. In the year that followed, Cogon’s Fiel Angeli Espejo Araoarao, 17 at that time (now wife of Jerome John J. Gabin from Siquijor and mother of Cielo, Tagbilaran City Information Officer who served as president of the development information officers in Bohol and Central Visayas), reigned as Miss Tagbilaran 1987. The blend of American and Spanish features in Geraldee Vallejo Campbell (now Mrs. Balbona, has traveled far and wide as a Cathay Pacific flight attendant based in Hongkong) was evident when she was crowned Miss Teen Tagbilaran in 1988.

Figuring in Bohol’s beauty pageant history as the first Miss Bohol Sandugo titleholder is Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1989 Winnie Moreno Lim (married for 13 years to Vicente Ventulan), now director of the rehabilitative services of the Life Care Center in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, USA. In 1990, a Penshoppe model, Ma. Victoria Gaviola Labado, became Mutya sa Tagbilaran and is now a fulfilled obstetrician-gynecologist, wife of Dr. Philip S. Larrazabal, head of the radiology and cancer treatment of Cebu Doctors Hospital and heads the Center for Women of the same institution. One of the pretty and smart ladies of the Matuod Clan from Manga, Mutya 1991 Joanna Cheryl Matuod Evardone (a cardiac intensive care unit nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, USA and recipient of the Star Award for Nurses for being one of the Most Outstanding Members of the Nursing Staff), succeeded Labado.  Still a student of Divine Word College when she won the crown (now a bank teller), Suzy Agoncillo Tabuno was Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1992 and was the city’s official representative to the Miss Bohol Sandugo ’92.

Adjudged Mutya 1993 was a no-nonsense lady, Sophia Lorraine Maniwang Alvarez, now Mrs. Gentallan, lives in Milford, Connecticut with husband Joel (from Antequera) and 10-month-old son Justin Christian and works as registered nurse in the intensive care unit and coronary care unit of Norwalk Hospital for a little over 5 years already. In 1994, Vanessa Joyce Matuod Evardone (Astillero), earned the second Mutya title for the Evardone Family after older sister Chewee (Joanna Cheryl), continued to triumph as Miss Bohol Sandugo 1994 pageant, and is now having her residency training in internal medicine at the Caritas Carney Hospital-Tafts University in Boston, Massachusetts. For some reasons, no pageant was held in 1995. The charming Mary Fragelle Felisilda Tejano (a BA in Mass Communications graduate of the University of the Philippines – Cebu, she had a stint as administrative officer of Guardo Realty Development Ventures until she left the company in March 2006 and recently migrated to Brampton, Ontario, Canada) from Lindaville Subdivision held the crown in 1996. The articulate Socorro D’ Marie Tallo Inting, Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1997 and Miss Bohol Sandugo 1997, is now a lawyer, a partner in the Mijares and Partners Law Office in Cebu who enjoys handling civil cases more than criminal cases and likes the challenge of trying to win a losing case and dealing with the loss of a winnable case.

An incoming fourth year high school student of Holy Spirit School in 1998, the glamorous Jesyl Bongosia del Rosario, Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1998, finished BS Commerce at the Holy Name University used to be a front office staff of Plantation Bay Resort and is now a bank employee of Metrobank in Cebu. Mutya 1999 Marimi Caballo Marapao, the unassuming lass from Lindaville, crossed boundaries she has never been before (Asia, Europe, North and South America) as an Asiana Airline flight attendant. Taloto’s Mutya Amor Telmo Zamora, Mutya 2000, was with the Cebu office of Gulf Airlines, an international airline flying Middle East and Europe but is now an accountant in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Succeeding Zamora in 2001 was Bool’s bet Jacklyn Joy Pilayre Yam, a BSC-Management Accounting graduate of HNU, best remembered for the “fall” which caused her a few stitches on the face before the pageant and coronation night.

A multi-faceted lady, Mutya 2002 Costie Jephilin Bojo Besas passed the nurses’ board examination given in June 2005 and the International English Language Testing System exam (November 2005), as well as the grueling N-CLEX in Hongkong administered on August 19, her 22nd birthday. She is waiting for her visa screen certificate for the United States. Rhoda Lee Logroño Ligan, Mutya 2003, was one of the successful examinees of the much-talked about licensure exam for nurses last June 11 and 12,2006 and now working on her application in a call center and forwarding company. Mutya 2004 Lorraine Marie Mapute Evasco, left for New York on August 3, 2006 to join her Math teacher-mother Alma Reyfil (she intends to pursue her college after savoring her days at Silliman University as a consistent BA MassCom honor student of their department). In 2005, a group of five lasses composed of Bool’s Richell “Rich Asuncion” Pacaldo Angalot (who is now having her share of stardom after becoming a GMA-7 Starstruck finalist), Poblacion 1’s Anna Karenina Fuentes Cimagala (another believer in the principles of Florence Nightingale, a third year nursing student at HNU), Mansasa’s April Lynn C. Recio (a second year BSN student of HNU), Katherine Margaret M. Tejano (recently migrated to Long Beach, California, USA), and Barbie Ann B. Vanta (was contemplating to enroll in a caregiving course, but went to Davao) were hailed as Miss Young Tagbilaran 2005 beauties. In 2006, the statuesque Margo Adelaiz Clarin Manigque (daughter of Miss Tagbilaran 1986 Suzette Clarin), one of the freshest faces on the catwalk as a promising fashion model and bronze medallist of the Manila Youth Games 2005, a nursing student of the University of Bohol, epitomizes the traits befitting of a Miss Tagbilaran 2006 titleholder. On April 28, 2007, Mary Lovely Ligones of Barangay Bool was crowned Miss Tagbilaran 2007 succeeding Margo Manigque.

Wherever the other beauties may have been, they have certainly left their marks in local beauty pageant history as women who exuded charm and grace and in later years have exhibited strength of character and shown compassion to the people whose lives they have touched. More significantly, the common denominator of these ladies is that they have triumphed over life’s challenges.

(The writer wishes to express gratitude to the parents, siblings and relatives of the candidates, Lawrence Medilo, Raymund Buslon, Joel Padolin and Chrysilli Mitzi Ibaya of Bohol Magazine for willingly sharing their photo collections… )
