EXTENDED 20TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION FOR BNHS CLASS OF 1987. Our Bohol National High School (BNHS) Class of 1987 had its “official” reunion last July 27 and 28, but the celebration continued till last Sunday, August 12, during the second round of bundle of joy giving at the Gawad Kalinga Saint Vincent Village in Cabawan District, this City. This time, Ma. Annaliza M. Preciado-Yano, officer-in-charge of the Mabuhay Philippines, Inc. of Ehime, Matsuyama, Japan and Noel Aranas Cericos of Aurora, Illinois, USA sponsored the activity which distributed used clothing and food stuffs for the 33 families. The first round of gift-giving undertaken by the group last May 15 was initiated by Teresita Maria S. Lapez-Storms, president of the Boholano Belgian Association based in Dendermonde, Belgium. We could not have done our Gawad Kalinga – Cabawan outreach activity sans the guidance and support of Arsenio and Virgilia Magallanes-Geñoso, project managers and Martin Alcano, project coordinator. (Thank you ever so much!) Other BNHS Class of 1987 alumni officers and batchmates who joined the recent activity were Isabelito Butawan, BNHS Class ’87 alumni president, Carlota L. Hormillada-Budiongan, Engr. Ver Neil Buslon Balaba, vice-president for internal affairs; Luzviminda Navarro-Tiongson, Edwina Ancla Laurel, moi (Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao-Gabin, vice-president for external affairs) and Vilsuette S. Jamisola-Lingo, Engr. Ramil Karaan Palileo and Alex Miculob Cuñado. During the career symposium we organized for the 500 fourth year students of DCPNHS last July 27, the group donated 50 Monobloc chairs and 50 stools for the Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School Gym, sponsored the first-ever luncheon fellowship for all the teachers and non-academic personnel of the school, and came up with a position paper supporting the restoration of the name “BOHOL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL,” aside from the dinner fellowship at Villa Alzhun Tourist Inn and Restaurant with Dr. Benita Fostanes-Osorio, former school principal as guest of honor and the beach gathering at Dumaluan Beach in Panglao on July 28. Next major reunion has been set in July 2012 on the occasion of the group’s 25th anniversary (pohon!) (jefilogabin)

After three (3) years, the City of Tagbilaran has been selected as test center for both professional and sub-professional levels held at the Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School (DCPNHS), formerly Bohol National High School, and the University of Bohol (UB), respectively. DENGUE ALERT. On behalf of the Holy Spirit School Federated Parents-Teachers Association (HSS-FPTA), my husband Jerome, Cielo and I went to extend condolences to the family of the late Sandra Dinorog (Calceta Street) the day before her interment. The daughter of Concepcion “Siony” Dinorog (a schoolmate during my college days at Divine Word College-Tagbilaran, now a caregiver in Canada), Sandra (born on February 2, 2001), a six-year-old Grade 1-Joy pupil of Holy Spirit School, succumbed to death due to complications caused by dengue hemorrhagic fever. For many times we have heard that “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” Allow me then to share with you information on dengue (pronounced “den-ghee”). “It is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute febrile viral disease caused by dengue viruses which are transmitted to humans through the bites of infective female aedes mosquitoes. The disease (incubation period is from 3 to 14 days), is not directly transmitted from person to person. What are its signs and symptoms? Dengue is characterized by sudden onset fever for 3 to 5 days, intense headache, muscle pain, joint pain, eye pain, anorexia, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and rash. If someone has observed these signs and symptoms on his or her family member, medical advice must be sought, as untreated dengue hemorrhagic fever can be fatal. Dengue is diagnosed by blood test. At present, there is no specific treatment, no vaccine is currently available. The only method of controlling dengue is to combat the aedes mosquitoes. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites is the key preventive measure. Dengue could also be prevented by using proper solid waste disposal methods, eliminating stagnant water in domestic environment, having improved water storage practices, discarding items that can collect rain or run-off water, especially old tires, changing regularly the outdoor water containers, using aerosol and liquid sprays to kill adult mosquitoes, using mosquito coil to be placed near possible entrance, such as windows, wearing long-sleeved clothes and long trousers when going outdoors, applying insect repellent on clothes and Off lotion for exposed part of the body, especially when traveling, and using mosquito bednet when the room is not air-conditioned.

BOHOL CARES’ “AN EVENING OF SHARING AND GIVING” ON AUGUST 18. After becoming curious of the “Pink October” (breast cancer) crusade in the program anchored by ABS-CBN Cebu’s Angela Calina in October 2006, I chanced to meet officers and members of BOHOL CARES, a cancer support group linking people through their experience of cancer, based at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (OLLP), Tagbilaran City. The group members believe that anyone's support can make an enormous difference in the life of a cancer patient. On August 18, 2007, at 6:00 in the evening, you can dine with Bohol Cares at JJ's Seafood Village. Proceeds of this fundraiser will be used for the Gift of Joy 2007 to provide some cancer patients with their basic medical needs. Tickets at P300.00 per person are available at the OLLP. Guest speaker for the evening is City Councilor Nerio Buchie Zamora. Entertainment will be provided by the Bukang Liwayway Dance Troupe of Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School with choreographer Oscar B. Real. Bohol Cares is open to people with cancer, their families and friends, volunteers and supporters. Formed in 2005 by five women who were experiencing life-altering situations, Bohol Cares, an association of people affected by cancer and their families and friends, intends to promote cancer awareness by early detection and prevention. Members meet informally once a month in a relaxed atmosphere for discussion and the sharing of experiences. As a support group, it provides an opportunity to forget about cancer for a while by holding social activities that have nothing to do with the illness. Last year, the group has embarked on “Walk With Us 2006” and the “Gift of Joy 2006.” A number of the group’s members have already passed away, while others are experiencing recurrence now. If you or someone you know has cancer, Bohol Cares can help. Interested parties may contact 4112413, 4113167, 2355389, 09193988402 or 09059436636 and ask for Nene, Pat or Estela or you can e-mail them at boholcares@yahoo.com. Thanks to Ms. Patricia Teh for giving me information.

‘BOTIKA SA KATAWHAN’ MARKS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

Last Tuesday, July 31, “Botika sa Katawhan,” a premium project of the Lim-Montes Administration marked its first anniversary held at the “Botika sa Katawhan” Office at the City Health Building.

It may be recalled that City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, on June 16, 2006, approved Ordinance No. C-193 authored by then City Vice-Mayor Nuevas Tirol – Montes and sponsored by Councilor Jose Antonio Salera Veloso, creating the “Botika sa Katawhan”, a joint project of the private sector and the City Government of Tagbilaran which gives free medicines to the poorest of the poor residents in the City to ensure good health and general welfare of the constituents.

“Botika sa Katawhan is making free medicines available to the poorest of the poor of Tagbilaran, a project borne out of the recognition that inaccessibility of medicines have, more often than not, caused this disabling disparity among residents of the City. It is an offshoot of several endeavors namely Bundles of Joy, Medical Missions, and Free Clinics targeted to provide relief services to a selected sector of the city that have been undertaken by a few highly active and concerned residents who took the initiative of soliciting medicines from both foundations in the United States of America (USA) and local donors.”

The ordinance states the limitations observed during these endeavors:
1)   these are scheduled events, thus, those who get sick during any other time other than the scheduled medical mission of free clinic cannot avail of the health services;

2)   there is absence of screening as to who can avail of these services so that not all those who could have needed more medical attention are attended to; and

2)   Vice-Chairperson - SP Chairperson, Committee on Health and Sanitation

BARANGAY, SK ELECTIONS
August 3 a holiday for high school, college students--Palace

Last updated 03:24pm (Mla time) 08/01/2007
MANILA, Philippines -- Malacañang has declared August 3 a special holiday for high school and college students all over the country to allow them to register as new voters for the barangay (village) and Sanggunian Kabataan [youth council] elections this October.
Proclamation 1345 released by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita Wednesday said the registration on August 4 and 5 would cover high school and college student who would be between 15 and 17 years old by October 29.
The proclamation said that despite the August 4 and 5 registration dates, August 3 was declared a holiday because "majority of the Filipino youth who would register for the barangay and SK elections would need ample time to travel to their home province, city, or municipality where they reside."
The Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) are directed to help supervise the implementation of the proclamation. (Lira D. Fernandez)

A CHILD’S COMMANDMENTS TO PARENTS

1.   My hands are small: please don’t expect perfection whenever I make bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My legs are short: please slow down so that I can keep up with you.

2.   My eyes have not seen the world as yours have: please let me explore safely. Don’t restrict me unnecessarily.

3.   Housework will always be there. I’m little for such a short time. Please take time to explain things for me about this wonderful world and do so willingly.

4.   Me feelings are tender: please be attentive to my needs. Don’t nag me all day long. (You wouldn’t want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness.) Treat me as the way you want to be treated.

5.   I’m a special gift from God: please take care of me as God intended you to do, holding me accountable for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by, and explaining to me in a loving manner.

6.   I need encouragement and praise, but not your criticism to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; remember you can criticize the things that I do without criticizing me.

7.   Please give me the freedom to make decisions concerning my self. Permit me to fail so that I can learn from my mistakes. Then, someday, I’ll be prepared to make the kind of decisions life requires me.

8.   Please don’t do things over for me. Somehow, that makes me feel that my efforts didn’t quite measure up to your expectations. I know it’s hard, but please don’t try to compare me with my brother or my sister.

9.   Please don’t be afraid to leave for a weekend. Kids need vacations from parents, just as parents need vacation from their kids.

10.   Please take me to church regularly, setting a good example for me to follow. I enjoy learning more about God.
