CONGRATULATIONS! MSGR. CRISPIN BARRETE VARQUEZ OF SEVILLA,BOHOL,NEW BISHOP OF BORONGAN,SAMAR

Honey Jerome, Cielo and I join in the celebration of thanksgiving of the entire Boholano people on the occasion of the Episcopal Ordination of Msgr. Crispin Barrete Varquez of Sevilla, Bohol last October 18 at the Cathedral Parish of Saint Joseph the Worker in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Thanks to General Manager Liezl Lim – Gregorio and Production Manager Oscar Ted Durban Avanzado for making possible the coverage and airing of ceremony last night in the local channel of the Bohol Community Cable Television Systems, Inc. (BCCTV).

Presiding the ordination was Msgr. Leo Medroso of the Diocese of Tagbilaran. It was attended by 16 bishops from all over the country, members of the clergy of the Dioceses of Tagbilaran and Talibon, Bohol, the religious/ devotees and laity who have been working and cooperating with Msgr. Bai during his previous assignments as parish priest prior to the Episcopal Ordination especially at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (K of C) Church (succeeded by Rev. Fr. Gerardo ‘Jingboy’ Saco) at Poblacion 2 and at the Cathedral Parish of Saint Joseph the Worker (succeeded by Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Malanog).

His first assignment as bishop will be in Borongan, Samar.

Msgr. Bai is well-loved by the people. I remember him well as the down-to-earth, humble and soft-spoken parish priest of the Cathedral while I was coordinating the visit of the Holy Spirit School – Thailand Youth delegates from Kanlayaneesithammarat School of Nakhonsithammarat, Southern Thailand with Geraldine Gulle Daray – Pugoy at the Cathedral.

Msgr. Bai has shown many good examples to his flock, especially during the Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan when Honey Jerome, Cielo and I would see him offer flowers for the Blessed Virgin Mary, something that not many priests do.

Years ago, at the Mayor’s Office, I saw that he would personally follow up requirements of building permits for the improvement and beautification projects of the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker while other parish priests entrust the task to their assistants.

Msgr. Bai, you will be greatly missed! We will never forget your good examples of humility and obedience!

Madz makes history as world’s best choir
By Doreen G. Yu
Tuesday, August 28, 2007

They’ve done it again – and as always, they’ve done so in perfect harmony.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, popularly known as the Madz, was again proclaimed the best choir in the world after topping the 2007 European Choral Grand Prix in Arezzo , Italy last Sunday, the only choir to ever win the distinction twice.

The Madz first won the honor in 1997 in Tours , France . The European Choral Grand Prix was established in 1989.

The group bested four other championship choirs from Cuba , Hungary , Russia , and Taiwan . They earned the right to compete in this year’s Grand Prix by winning the Florilége Vocal de Tours in France last year.

Winners of choral competitions held annually in Arezzo and Gorizia, Italy ; Varna , Bulgaria ; Tolosa , Spain ; Tours , France ; and Debrecan , Hungary automatically qualify for the next year’s European Choral Grand Prix. The site of the Grand Prix is rotated among the six cities.

The Grand Prix winner, or laureate, receives a diploma, trophy, cash prize up to 4,000 euros and other prizes determined by the organizing city. Strict competition rules prohibit the laureate from competing in international choral competitions for the next two years.

The Madz was organized in 1963 by National Artist for Music Andrea O. Veneracion as the University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers, composed of students, faculty and alumni of the university.

Following a Renaissance tradition, they sing in a semicircle without a conductor. The Madz has an extensive repertoire that ranges from classic choral masterpieces to avant-garde compositions, Renaissance madrigals to folk, pop and humorous novelty numbers.

The group hit the international stage in 1969 at the 1st Choruses of the World Festival at the Lincoln Center in New York , and has performed to critical and popular acclaim all over the world. They have won top prizes in practically all international choral competitions, and have nearly 40 Philippine and international recordings. They have performed before royalty and heads of state, including Pope Paul VI, King Juan Carlos of Spain and American Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon.

The Madz led by choir master Mark Anthony Carpio will return to Manila today.
