A haboob (Arabic: هَبوب‎ "blasting/drafting") is a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world.

They have been observed in the Sahara desert (typically Sudan, where they were named and described), as well as across the Arabian Peninsula, throughout Kuwait, and in the most arid regions of Iraq. African haboobs result from the northward summer shift of the inter-tropical front into North Africa, bringing moisture from the Gulf of Guinea. Haboob winds in the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, Kuwait, and North America are frequently created by the collapse of a thunderstorm, while haboobs in Australia may be frequently associated with cold fronts. The deserts of Central Australia, especially near Alice Springs, are particularly prone to haboobs, with sand and debris reaching several kilometers into the sky and leaving up to a foot of sand in the haboob's path.

The arid and semiarid regions of North America—in fact, any dry region—may experience haboobs. The term haboob is not commonly used in the arid regions of the United States where these events occur. In North America the most common terms for these events is either dust storm or sandstorm. In the U.S., they frequently occur in the deserts of Arizona, including around the cities of Yuma and Phoenix —and in New Mexico and Texas. During thunderstorm formation, winds move in a direction opposite to the storm's travel, and they move from all directions into the thunderstorm. When the storm collapses and begins to release precipitation, wind directions reverse, gusting outward from the storm and generally gusting the strongest in the direction of the storm's travel.

When this downdraft, or downburst, reaches the ground, it blows dry, loose sand up from the desert, creating a wall of sediment that precedes the storm cloud. This wall of sand can be up to 100 km (62 mi) wide and several kilometers in elevation. At their strongest, haboob winds often travel at 35–100 km/h (~20–60 mph), and they may approach with little or no warning. Often rain does not appear at ground level as it evaporates in the hot, dry air (a phenomenon known as virga). Occasionally, when the rain does persist, it can contain a considerable quantity of dust. Severe cases are called mud storms. Eye and respiratory system protection are advisable for anyone who must be outside during a haboob. Moving to shelter is highly desirable during a strong event.

Anonymous Diary Blog / Ang Balikbayan
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:12:32 PM »

"Where are they nga pala anak?" "there, at the park nag-eenjoy sa snow, medyo makapal ngayon sa NY, kaya nageenjoy sila riding in ski"

"Di ka sumama?"

"Prepare all things muna Ma, mahirap bukas mag-ayos"

"Saan ka tutuloy sa bahay natin?" "yap tumawag na ako kay Cousin Jennifer, she prepares all things there for me, mag papa cater ako sa birthday ko doon, closing the street of Marigold he he he"

"May pupunta kaya e lahat me handa that time pasko e" tanong ng ina

"Sino yun yung taga slum area?"

"Yeah, siya yun pero mabait yun kahit mahirap lang he's one of my great friend, di ba siya nag Valedictorian noong primary ko, nakapag-aral kaya siya, kasi nong High School bigla siyang nawala at nawalan ako ng balita sa kaniya, lalo na ng dinemolish na ang slums"

"Di mo na makikita yun baka lumipat ng bahay, maybe nakapag-abroad na matalino e, maybe he's now a great engineer or something, I know magaling sa Math yun, di mo kaya e kaya third honorable mention ka lang anak"

"Nice talking to you Ma" "okey, see you at the dinner anak"

"Dengue? "oo iyong sa lamok galing, nakamamatay iyon"

"I heard that in US, mostly sa tropical part of the world, mosquito na lumalabas tuwing 5am to 6am at ganun din sa gabi ,kaya dagdag ingat kayo of course pati ako, ay naku buhay talaga , hmmm, saan ka man naroron Tope, kumusta na lang, oo nga pala sa Dec 24 ng alas 3PM, maghahanda ako sa bahay, pupuntahan ko si Chairman para sa permit"

"Permit saan?"

"Of course kaya nga pinuntahan kita e, how much ba?"

"Ikaw naman, di naman ako nagpapabayad"

"Joke lang Kabron he he he, oo nga pala wala ka bang balita kay John Paul?"

"John Paul Mangahas sir"

School, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR"

"Ha! alam mo birthday ko, ha ha ha ikaw nga si John Paul, what happen to you?"

"Don't ever ever call me sir John (niyakap niya ito) ikaw lang ang bumati sa akin ng happy birthday, you know may gift ako sa unang babati sa akin, and that is I will bring him or her to USA to work with me, any work na pwede niyang gawin, I'll prepare all the things sa documents, kahit mahirap kunin ito aayusin ko at gagastusan, ikaw pala iyon Paul"

" Teka nga muna wag mo akong ipo o opo ha, we are the same human sige, I double the price, tell your mom kasama siya ipagagamot ko siya roon, my wife is a doctor there, deal?"

USA and Canada / John McAfee: sex, drugs and anti-virus software

John McAfee, the founder of the McAfee computer security firm, is in hiding in Belize. Christopher Williams examines his colourful life.

He’s the opposite of the common stereotype of the boring computer nerd. John McAfee, wanted for questioning over a murder and in hiding in Belize, has spent almost two decades living a life of alleged heavy drug abuse, sexual experimentation, deadly extreme sports and media manipulation.

It was as a software designer at the arms giant Lockheed in the 1980s that the 67-year-old, English-born American set out on the path to infamy and fortune.

Computer viruses were beginning to emerge and spread, and his machine contracted an infection dubbed Pakistani Brain, which slowed down floppy drives and made seven precious kilobytes of memory unavailable. McAfee resolved the problem himself, but hit upon the idea of creating software that could detect malicious software and remove it automatically.

“It was an accident, like anything else in life,” he later said of his invention.

By the end of the decade, his company had spawned an anti-virus industry that is now worth several billion dollars annually. McAfee himself was rich and famous within the computer industry, but his gift for self promotion would soon see him toppled from the company he founded.

The Diamond Ring effect is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia’s Tropical North Queensland on November 14, 2012. Eclipse-hunters have flocked to Queensland’s tropical northeast to watch the region’s first total solar eclipse in 1,300 years on November 14, which occurred as the moon passed between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow path on the globe and lasting for a maximum on the Australian mainland of 2 minutes and 5 seconds. AFP / GREG WOOD

SYDNEY — From boats bobbing on the Great Barrier Reef, to hot air balloons hovering over the rainforest, and the hilltops and beaches in between, tens of thousands of scientists, tourists and amateur astronomers watched as the sun, moon and Earth aligned and plunged northern Australia into darkness during a total solar eclipse Wednesday.

Stubborn clouds that many feared would ruin the view parted — somewhat — in north Queensland, defying forecasts of a total eclipse-viewing bust and relieving spectators who had fanned out to glimpse the celestial phenomenon.

“Immediately before, I was thinking, ‘Are we gonna see this?’ And we just had a fantastic display — it was just beautiful,” said Terry Cuttle of the Astronomical Association of Queensland, who has seen a dozen total solar eclipses over the years. “And right after it finished, the clouds came back again. It really adds to the drama of it.”

Spectators whooped and clapped with delight as the moon passed between the sun and Earth, leaving a slice of the continent’s northeast in sudden darkness.

Starting just after dawn, the eclipse cast its 150-kilometer (95-mile) shadow in Australia’s Northern Territory, crossed the northeast tip of the country and was swooping east across the South Pacific, where no islands are in its direct path. A partial eclipse will be visible from east Indonesia, the eastern half of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and southern parts of Chile and Argentina. Totality — the darkness that happens at the peak of the eclipse — lasted just over two minutes in the parts of Australia where it was visible.

Gloomy weather had left many eclipse-chasers who had traveled to Australia from around the globe anxious that they wouldn’t be able to see a thing. But the clouds moved in time for many to watch as the moon blotted out the sun’s rays and cast a shadow over the tropical landscape.

Hank Harper, 61, and his two children flew from Los Angeles just to see the eclipse, and feared the clouds would ruin their adventure. The three of them boarded a hot air balloon filled with other eager tourists, crossed their fingers — and were rewarded with a perfect view.

“We gambled everything — drove through the rain and didn’t even know if the balloon was going to go up,” he said by phone from the hot air balloon as he and Harrison, 10, and Reilly, 12, watched the sun’s rays re-emerge from behind the moon while kangaroos hopped on the ground below. “It was everything I could have hoped for.”

On a dive-boat drifting along the blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, a cheer of relief erupted as the clouds moved away at the moment of total eclipse, followed by a hush as darkness fell across the water. One scuba diver floated on his back in the sea, watching the phenomenon unfold as he bobbed in the waves. Birds on a nearby island, startled by the sudden lack of light, began to stir.
“It was absolutely amazing. We were coming out this morning and there was a wee bit of cloud around and we were apprehensive,” Adam O’Malley of the Passions of Paradise dive company said by phone from his boat. “We got a full view — absolutely breathtaking.”

Some Queensland hotels have been booked up for more than three years and more than 50,000 people have flooded into the region to watch the solar spectacle, said Jeff Gillies, regional director of Queensland Tourism.

Skygazers crowded along palm-fringed beaches, fields and clifftops to watch the event. Fitness fanatics gathered for the Solar Eclipse Marathon, where the first rays of the sun re-emerging from behind the moon was the starting gun. Some began partying days ago at a weeklong eclipse festival.
Scientists were studying how animals respond to the eclipse, with underwater cameras capturing the effects of sudden darkness on the creatures of the Great Barrier Reef.

The next total solar eclipse won’t happen until March 2015.
