Austria’s political future is on a knife-edge, with the candidate bidding to be the European Union’s first far-right president holding a wafer-thin lead over his rival.

According to the public broadcaster ORF, Norbert Hofer of the rightwing populist Freedom party (FPÖ) was neck and neck on 50% with his rival Alexander Van der Bellen, a former Green party leader who is running as an independent.

Postal ballots, accounting for 14% of eligible voters and expected to favour the left-leaning candidate, are being tallied on Monday, and a full result is not expected until Monday afternoon. Fifty per cent and one vote would suffice to hand the presidency to one of the two candidates. Data from Austria’s interior ministry, which does not take into account the projected postal vote, put Hofer on 51.9% and Van der Bellen on 48.1%.

Even though the Austrian presidency is mainly a ceremonial role, a vote of around 50% for the far-right politician Hofer already represents a political earthquake in a country in which two centrist parties have dominated the landscape since 1945, and will be celebrated as a triumph by xenophobic parties across the continent. -- http://www.theguardian.com/

Showbiz & Celebrity / PH's Jaclyn Jose wins best actress at Cannes

CANNES, France – Filipino actress Jaclyn Jose won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 22, for her mesmerizing performance as a mother forced to sell drugs to survive before falling prey to corrupt police. (READ: Director Brillante Mendoza urges Duterte to 'change' Philippines)

A tearful Jose said she was "so surprised" as she took to the stage to accept the award for her role in Ma' Rosa by acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza.

She said she had to forget everything she learned in her 30 years in the business for the role as a sweetshop owner and small-time drug dealer in Ma' Rosa.

"The biggest challenge for me was not to act. Especially since I am coming from television shows where I play loud and campy characters," she told reporters.

The 52-year-old said she had to "tone everything down to zero" – even performing without makeup on for the stark, realistic presentation of the Philippine slums favored by Mendoza.

It is a dramatic change from her regular job, playing a spoiled, rich woman in the popular Filipino TV soap opera, The Millionaire's Wife.

Variety magazine praised Jose for the "naturalistic grace" of her film performance, playing the matriarch of a family struggling to survive amid squalor.

The daughter of a Filipina mother and a largely absent American serviceman father, Jose first became famous in Philippine showbiz circles for her ethereal beauty.

But she has proven to be a versatile and hard-working actress, starring in dramas, comedies, horror stories, romances, and television soap operas.

She has won numerous acting awards in her native country and acted for some of its most prestigious filmmakers.

She appeared in Mendoza's first movie The Masseur 11 years ago and also his drama Serbis, which competed in Cannes in 2008.

In a quick interview aired on TV Festival de Cannes, Jaclyn spoke about her victory and how much this moment meant to her.

“I am so thankful to Brillante Mendoza,” the veteran actress said. “I did not [expect]. I just want to come here and be with my daughter and walk the red carpet.

“I was just sitting there watching the stage how nice it... is and how come in the Philippines we can’t make this, just these simple things and then they call my name. So I got surprised. I’m so happy really, really,” Jaclyn added. “ But of course I’m proud, so proud of our film. We just don’t know how the people would react or will like our film but us, we know that we did our best and we know that we have a good film." – Rappler.com

Philippine president-elect blasts Catholic church, bishops

The Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The presumptive Philippine president-elect has blasted the country’s dominant Roman Catholic church as “the most hypocritical institution” and accused some of its bishops of corruption for allegedly asking favors from politicians, including him.

In a late-night news conference that dragged on to the early hours of Sunday in southern Davao city, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte questioned the relevance of Catholic bishops, citing his overwhelming victory in the May 9 presidential election based on an unofficial count despite efforts by them to persuade Filipinos not to vote for him.

Such harsh public condemnation of the influential church and its bishops by a top politician is rare in the Philippines, Asia’s bastion of Catholicism. It presages a potentially thorny relationship between the Catholic church and the incoming president, who shocked bishops in November when he cursed Pope Francis for sparking a huge traffic jam that trapped him for hours during a visit to Manila.

Duterte apologized after bishops denounced his action.

IT WASN’T the kind of homecoming this “balikbayan” had in mind when he returned to the country after eluding local authorities for more than 30 years.

Rommel Ventura Lachica, who was convicted in 1979, was rearrested in Cainta, Rizal province, on Wednesday and brought back to the national penitentiary, not only to serve the rest of his sentence but also face new charges stemming from his escape in 1986, the Philippine National Police said.

In a report released on Friday, the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said Lachica was tracked down at St. Francis Subdivision in Cainta, shortly after he flew back to the country from the United States to visit family members.

Lachica was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Pasig Regional Trial Court for robbery with homicide in 1979 and escaped from New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City on March 18, 1986, according to Senior Supt. Joel Pernito, regional chief of CIDG-Calabarzon.

Authorities later learned that Lachica had turned up in Los Angeles, California, and managed to acquire American citizenship in 1990 under the name Rommel Reyes Agoncillo, Pernito said.

Lachica was brought back to Bilibid and would face charges for illegal use of an alias and falsification of public documents.

He had an airplane and a helicopter on standby 24/7 for his friend throughout the three-month campaign, part of a three-decade friendship that included daily phone calls, golf games and motorbike rides, but why is Apollo Quiboloy now sidelined as Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte prepares for the presidency?

In an unexpected move, the camp of the founder of the homegrown Christian sect Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Name Above Every Name, on Friday openly criticized the presumptive President-elect’s men, saying they had set up a cordon sanitaire around Duterte that left out his own spiritual adviser.

“It’s quite a powerful cordon sanitaire that left out the original supporters of Mayor Duterte, including Pastor Quiboloy himself. It pains us and it saddens us,” Mike Abe, a spokesperson for Quiboloy, told the Inquirer by phone in Filipino.

Abe named Duterte’s longtime executive assistant, Christopher “Bong” Go, and incoming presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo as the ones controlling the cordon sanitaire.

He said the last time Duterte and Quiboloy spoke to each other was at 2 a.m. on May 10, adding he was there.

“After that, their communication was already cut off. We believe there are people getting in the way of the two friends,” Abe said.

Jagged limestone cliffs accented with green foliage surged from the ocean like a surreal painting or scene from Jurassic Park. Above, a suspended full moon in the pitch black sky was the only light to guide us home. Hours before, the sun sunk into an otherworldly fuchsia and orange sky dotted with cotton candy clouds. Even the sounds of our boat’s engine could not obstruct the sheer tranquility of the moment. In the middle of calm waters, hundreds of miles from any city or hordes of people, I finally understood why sometimes the best moments are always worth the travel time.
