High cholesterol 'does not cause heart disease' new research finds, so treating with statins a 'waste of time'

Cholesterol does not cause heart disease in the elderly and trying to reduce it with drugs like statins is a waste of time, an international group of experts has claimed.

A review of research involving nearly 70,000 people found there was no link between what has traditionally been considered “bad” cholesterol and the premature deaths of over 60-year-olds from cardiovascular disease.

Published in the BMJ Open journal, the new study found that 92 percent of people with a high cholesterol level lived longer.

The authors have called for a re-evaluation of the guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis, a hardening and narrowing of the arteries, because “the benefits from statin treatment have been exaggerated”.

The results have prompted immediate scepticism from other academics, however, who questioned the paper’s balance.

High cholesterol is commonly caused by an unhealthy diet, and eating high levels of saturated fat in particular, as well as smoking.

It is carried in the blood attached to proteins called lipoproteins and has been traditionally linked to cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease and aortic disease.

The month-long observance of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan began on June 6 and Muslims around the world have started abstaining from food, drinks, sexual relations, and sinful speech and behavior.

The "sawm" or fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and according to Marcina Morados, Dean of the University of the Philippines Islamic Studies, there are many benefits for a Muslim who observes fasting during this month.

A report by GMA News reporter Mariz Umali said the dawn to sunset fast is not a mere diet practice.

Non-Muslims should recognize the holiness of the occasion.

Despite abstaining from food and water among other restrictions, it is "business as usual" for Muslims. They still go to school or work as usual.

In Islamic countries, Muslims are given certain privileges like shortened work hours. Eating in public and open display of food and water are also prohibited, with restaurants required to drape their windows with black curtains.

As a courtesy to those fasting during Ramadan, non-Muslims are enjoined not to schedule working lunches or offer them food or water any moment before the sun sets.

Non-Muslims are however, welcome to join Muslims for Iftar or the meal to break the fast after sunset.

You may also greet them "Ramadan Kareem", "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Happy Ramadan."

"Ang okasyong ng Ramadan ay pwede nating gamitin para i-highlight natin 'yung common universal values between Islam and Christianity," Dean Morados said.

Ramadan may be likened to the Lenten season for Christians, wherein believers are encouraged to give up vices, abstain from meat and fast on Fridays.

If anyone ever had a doubt about man’s best friend, they need only hear the story of Jacky to change their mind.

In the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, there is a dog being heralded as a hero for giving his life up to save his owner.  Gurdev Singh, a farmer, was sleeping outside of his house which is located in a small village not far from the Dudhwa National Park.  Jacky, Singh’s every faithful companion, slept right beside him, until disturbed by a tiger he smelled in the immediate vicinity. Jacky tried to rouse Singh and alert him to the imminent danger.

As Singh drowsily awoke, the tiger attacked and Jacky began to defend his owner.  The dog gave the farmer enough time to grab a stick, yell out, and start to defend against the animal. In the horrific frey, Jacky, severely injured, was dragged off by the viscous animal. Singh’s family rushed out of the house and quickly began their search for the four-year-old hero. Sadly, Jacky’s body was recovered some distance away.  Forest officials were notified of the tiger’s presence, and the family, grieved over their loss, buried the dog who had so heroically fought off the tiger without thought to himself, only that of his owner.

“Jacky’s mother was a street dog and my children, Supreet and Gulshanpreet, took it in four years ago as a pup. It was a part of our family and used to follow them to school. Gulshanpreet is inconsolable and didn’t eat for a day. Jacky returned the favour of a few chapatis a day by giving up its life. I wish humans could learn from it how to love others and show devotion,” Singh told the Times of India.

A forest ranger stated the tiger’s appearance in the village was not entirely surprising, given the population of large cats in the region is very high and, as humans have encroached on the area, they will often come into villages looking for food.

Jacky, greatly missed by his family, is a standing testament to the loyalty of a dog to their humans.  He gave his own life saving the one who had taken him out of a life on the streets.  Jacky is the true personification of the word loyalty.

This year’s G7 summit in Ise-shima, Japan was full of spectacles worthy of arresting headlines, including U.S. President Barack Obama’s historic embrace of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima on May 27th. Prime Minister Abe as host has enjoyed a considerable boost for his efforts as host and now is confidently heading into an upper house election on July 10th. Like most international summits, however, what lies beyond the headlines are the agreements made among leaders even if not declared in the moment. Much of what the G7 leaders was focused on was the creation of a joint approach to the global rise of revisionism led by China and Russia, who resent not being part of the gathering. The most consequential outcome of the two-day event on Japan’s idyllic island was the emergence of a new phase in the ongoing Sino-Japanese geoeconomic competition. It characterizes a global trend for the world’s leading liberal economies for years to come.

Nationalist-driven and aggressive foreign policy is ubiquitous among authoritarian regimes. China and Russia in particular have been challenging the status quo by displays of military force in Crimea and the South China Sea. Despite regional apprehension and American warnings, the Chinese representative at the recent Shangri-La Dialogue warned  that in the South China Sea, “We do not make trouble but we have no fear of trouble.” While divergent objectives guide such self-aggrandizing behavior, Beijing and Moscow make strange bedfellows under one common goal: to create a new geopolitical reality in opposition to the current liberal world order.

Science and Research / The Evolutionary Argument Against Reality

As we go about our daily lives, we tend to assume that our perceptions — sights, sounds, textures, tastes — are an accurate portrayal of the real world. Sure, when we stop and think about it — or when we find ourselves fooled by a perceptual illusion — we realize with a jolt that what we perceive is never the world directly, but rather our brain’s best guess at what that world is like, a kind of internal simulation of an external reality. Still, we bank on the fact that our simulation is a reasonably decent one. If it wasn’t, wouldn’t evolution have weeded us out by now? The true reality might be forever beyond our reach, but surely our senses give us at least an inkling of what it’s really like.
