London (AFP) - The ban on the Islamic burkini swimsuit on some French beaches has triggered disdain in English-speaking countries, where outlawing religion-oriented clothing is seen as hampering integration.

Newspaper commentators have condemned the ban as an absurdity, and one questioned how a burkini could be more offensive than "middle-aged bum crack" bursting out from traditional Western beachwear.

And experts said the debate raised questions about the French one-size-fits-all model of integration.

In Britain, the full-face veil is not an uncommon sight in towns and city districts with big Muslim populations, but ostensibly does not stir as strong a reaction as in France.

One of the world's most secular countries, France strongly separates religion and public life.

Defenders of the policy say a common arena without religious connotations helps avoid sectarian conflicts and encourages equality.

As a result, the burkini -- like the burqa before it -- has come under fire in France. Some deem it a garment that channels radical Islam and oppresses women.

"It is the expression of a political project, a counter-society, based notably on the enslavement of women," French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said of the burkini Wednesday.

Cockroach Milk Could Be The Next Green Health Food Craze

Cockroach milk could be next green health food craze after scientists developed a method to make it into a protein supplement.

Scientists found that female Pacific beetle cockroaches feed their young a liquid crystal milk, which is extremely nutritious. This particular species of cockroach is native to Hawaii.

“The crystals are like a complete food – they have proteins, fats and sugars,” Dr. Sanchari Banerjee, the leading author of the study, told The Sun Star Monday. “Cockroaches are infamous for their ability to thrive in any condition surviving without food for a month, therefore it makes sense that they could produce a formula as protein-rich as this.”

Cockroach milk could offer an environmentalist alternative to cow milk. Cows emit enormous quantities of greenhouse gases and have other environmental impacts. Up to 37 percent of the world’s methane emissions are directly related to cattle. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation has stated that cattle have a greater environmental impact than cars and trucks.

The scientists determined that cockroach milk is one of the most nutritious substances in the world; it’s three times richer in calories than buffalo milk. A taste test of the milk revealed that it had essentially no flavor.

“I discovered that these little embryos at a certain development were able to drink,” Dr. Barbara Stay, a professor emerita at the University of Iowa who was involved in the research, told National Public Radio Saturday. “What they were drinking was a liquid substance.”

Stay and other researchers discovered a method to “milk the cockroach,” by “[substituting] a filter paper in the brood sac for the embryos and you leave it there…you take it out and you get the milk.”

Researchers have even found a way to replicate the milk formulas in the lab in order to create protein supplements with the same properties as cockroach milk. The scientists plan to reproduce the milky substance using yeast. -- http://dailycaller.com/

History / The biggest mass murder in the history of the world
« on: August 04, 2016, 09:44:23 AM »
By Ilya Somin August 3 at 11:05 AM

Who was the biggest mass murderer in the history of the world? Most people probably assume that the answer is Adolf Hitler, architect of the Holocaust. Others might guess Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, who may indeed have managed to kill even more innocent people than Hitler did, many of them as part of a terror famine that likely took more lives than the Holocaust. But both Hitler and Stalin were outdone by Mao Zedong. From 1958 to 1962, his Great Leap Forward policy led to the deaths of up to 45 million people – easily making it the biggest episode of mass murder ever recorded.

Historian Frank Dikötter, author of the important book Mao’s Great Famine recently published an article in History Today, summarizing what happened:

Pardon your French: Chinese tourists and a clash of cultures in Paris
As Paris becomes a hot spot for Chinese tourism, cultural tensions arise between tourists and locals.
by Aela Callan

Paris, France - In the centre of Paris, on Rue de Provence, sits the bar and restaurant Stan & Co. It's a dimly lit, homely French bistro with wooden ceilings and stained glass panelling. Waiters are busy serving croques monsieurs and cups of café au lait to tables tucked in cosy bay windows.

Stephanie Verret has run the place for 25 years. But it's only in the past few that Rue de Provence has started to change. "All the people in the street sold their businesses to Chinese," she says. "Before it was like a little village with people taking coffee and croissants in the morning."

Now, lucrative Chinese restaurants and duty-free shops line the street. Crowds of Chinese tourists push down the narrow footpaths, following flag-wielding guides who hustle past each other in a race to get to the front.

Stephanie finds herself daily in a scene that looks more like downtown Beijing than Paris. "They don't say hello, they don't speak French, they don't speak English," she says, incredulous.

Antimicrobial chemicals found in common household products could be wreaking havoc with people’s guts, according to a research paper out this week in the journal Science.

Triclosan is an antibacterial compound used in soaps, detergent and toothpaste, as well as toys and plastics. It was originally only used in hospitals, but it found its way into homes as Americans became more germ-phobic. (However, recent studies have found it no more effective at killing bacteria than plain soap.)

Now, there are growing concerns about the possible negative effects of the chemical on human health and the environment. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), animal studies have shown that the chemical can act as a hormone disruptor. A 2008 study found traces of triclosan in the urine of 75% of the participants – some as young as six. The chemical has also been found in more than half of freshwater streams in the US.

Ancient Silk Road hygiene sticks lead to a "fluke" discovery

Thousands of years ago, travelers and traders carried goods across the vast distances between Europe, the Middle East and Asia along routes that collectively become known as the Silk Road. Named after the silks that were exported from China, the routes helped spread news, art and culture through a large part of the world. Now, a new study focused on a 2,000-year-old Silk Road latrine shows that the routes also helped spread something else – disease.

A team of researchers from the University of Cambridge and China's Academy of Social Sciences and Gansu Institute for Cultural Relics and Archaeology investigated latrines at the Xuanquanzhi relay station, an archeological site in northwestern China that once served as a rest stop of sorts along the Silk Road. It was built in 111 BC and used until 109 AD (the Silk Road itself is generally acknowledged to have existed from about 130 BCE to about the mid 1400s).

There they found hygeine sticks that had bits of cloth stuck to them that were used by people to clean up after using the latrine. Based on their function, the sticks also held bits of ancient feces. By analyzing the feces, the researchers found the eggs from four species of parasitic worms: roundworm, whipworm, tapeworm and Chinese liver fluke.

"This may seem surprising," writes Cambridge researcher and study co-author Piers Mitchell on academic site The Conversation, "but the eggs of many species of intestinal worms are very tough and may survive thousands of years in the ground."

CEBU CITY (Updated) -- A Chinese woman was arrested upon her arrival at the Mactan Cebu International Airport Wednesday morning because she allegedly carried about four kilos of crystal meth, locally known as "shabu".

That would have fetched P6 million in street sales.

It was not her first time here.

Kazuo Okada, Universal Entertainment Corp. chairman and former Steve Wynn partner, plans to challenge Macau in wooing Chinese gamblers to his Manila casino resort that could cost $4 billion and is scheduled to open in November.

Okada, 73, wants his casino featuring a 100 meter (328 feet) dancing water fountain and indoor beach “to compete with what is in Macau” and other parts of Asia, said Takahiro Usui, chief operating officer at Universal Entertainment’s Tiger Resort Leisure and Entertainment Inc. “This project will promote Manila as a destination in the region and the world.”

Universal Entertainment rose 9.6 percent to 2,597 yen in Tokyo trading Wednesday, the biggest gain since June 2013. The benchmark Topix was little changed.

Communist neighbor’s position on last week’s landmark South China Sea ruling and was interested in advancing two-way talks on the disputed waterway.

Phuc told Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Mongolia last week that he didn’t endorse China’s stance on the international tribunal’s ruling, the Vietnamese government said in a statement late Monday. Phuc reiterated Vietnam’s welcoming of the court’s decision, which found no legal basis for China’s claim to "historic rights" to resources in the area.

Vietnam "declares it refutes untruthful coverage by Chinese media regarding the East Sea issue from the meeting" between Phuc and Li, the government said, using Vietnam’s preferred term for the South China Sea.

The Vietnam rebuke comes as China touts what it says are dozens of international backers for its stance on the South China Sea, as it seeks to show at home it has widespread support after the ruling went against it. It highlights the difficulty for China in walking a line between President Xi Jinping’s “neighborhood diplomacy” and in continuing its assertions to sovereignty -- and its military buildup -- in the waterway. The risk now is China receives further public rebuttals.
