MANILA, Philippines – Call it a premonition, but Press Secretary Cerge Remonde has made peace with the Lord the night before his death.

In a status message he posted on his account in the popular social networking Facebook, Remonde thanked the Lord for His “infinite love that meets our every need and provides all the beautiful and wonderful things we experience in life.”

“Fill us with your peace as we learn to fully trust in your providence. Help us to do all that we are capable and the rest, we entrust unto you,” he further wrote.

He wrote the message at about 6:51p.m. Monday. He died at around 11:51a.m. the following day.

Several messages of condolence were immediately posted by his friends, colleagues, and people close to him on Facebook.

“May you rest in peace now, Cerge. Thanks for al the stories and jokes that I leaned from you. I will forever treasure the friendship. Farewell and goodbye to you my friend,” one said.

“It was nice to have spent a good afternoon with you yesterday (Monday). I did not know that your call at 11 p.m. last night was your last. I will treasure the friendship for always,” another wrote.

Technology / Cyber crooks targets banks, social networks

The danger of online social networking.

SAN FRANCISCO—An annual security report released Tuesday by technology titan Cisco warns that banks and online social networks are prime targets for increasingly sophisticated cyber crooks.

"Criminals have been taking note of the large crowds in social-networking sites. They steal them with various techniques," said Cisco security researcher Scott Olechowski.

Tactics used to get into social-networking profiles include hacking password databases at vulnerable online services and then exploiting the fact that many people use one password for multiple accounts.

Cisco estimates that a Koobface computer worm, named as a play on social networking hot spot "Facebook," has infected more than three million computers since it first appeared in 2008.

LGU Philippines / Who wants to be a Philippine Senator ?
« on: December 07, 2009, 03:22:40 pm »

Sharing with you this article circulated via email lately.   Read on.

Miriam Defensor Santiago was featured in Correspondents last week.

There's food for everybody 'ika nga!

Health and Food / Can Lack of Sleep Kill You ?
« on: November 26, 2009, 10:44:12 am »

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das (above) from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India . He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road . Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India . However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?

A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason

However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier in
terview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out': Boss' Day Out: Ranjan Das of SAP India.

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep ( and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled ).

A man bumps into a woman in a hotel lobby and as he does,
his elbow goes into her breast.  They are both quite startled.

The man turns to her and says, 'Ma'am, if your heart is as soft as your breast,
I know you'll forgive me.'

She replies,  'If your penis is as hard as your elbow, I'm in room 221.'

If there is a problem in CHECKPOINTS, just show this text message to the police officer in charge.

This text message from 2600 is also very important when buying an old and very cheap used car.

This will also be useful when you are following a car with a doubtful car plate no.

And lastly, when you register your car at any LTO Office try to check this out whether your car is genuinely registered or a tampered or fake OR was issued to you by an unscrupulous LTO employee or fixer.

Health and Food / Raising Your HDL Levels
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:44:46 pm »

By Richard N. Fogoros, M.D.,
Updated: September 15, 2009

HDL cholesterol, or "good" cholesterol, appears to scour the walls of blood vessels, cleaning out excess cholesterol. It then carries that excess cholesterol -- which otherwise might have been used to make the "plaques" that cause coronary artery disease -- back to the liver for processing. So when we measure a person's HDL cholesterol level, we seem to be measuring how vigorously his or her blood vessels are being "scrubbed" free of cholesterol.

HDL levels below 40 mg/dL result in an increased risk of coronary atery disease, even in people whose total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels are normal. HDL levels between 40 and 60 mg/dL are considered "normal." However, HDL levels greater than 60 mg/dL may actually protect people from heart disease. Indeed, for several years, doctors have known that when it comes to HDL levels, the higher the better. Click here for a quick review of cholesterol and triglycerides.

How can We Increase Our HDL Levels?

Aerobic exercise.   Many people don't like to hear it, but regular aerobic exercise (any exercise, such as walking, jogging or bike riding, that raises your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time) may be the most effective way to increase HDL levels. Recent evidence suggests that the duration of exercise, rather than the intensity, is the more important factor in raising HDL choleserol. But any aerobic exercise helps.

Lose weight. Obesity results not only in increased LDL cholesterol, but also in reduced HDL cholesterol. If you are overweight, reducing your weight should increase your HDL levels. This is especially important if your excess weight is stored in your abdominal area; your waist-to-hip ratio is particularly important in determining whether you ought to concentrate on weight loss.

Stop smoking.   If you smoke, giving up tobacco will result in an increase in HDL levels. (This is the only advantage I can think of that smokers have over non-smokers -- it gives them something else to do that will raise their HDL.)

Cut out the trans fatty acids.  Trans fatty acids are currently present in many of your favorite prepared foods -- anything in which the nutrition label reads "partially hydrogenated vegetable oils" -- so eliminating them from the diet is not a trivial task. But trans fatty acids not only increase LDL cholesterol levels, they also reduce HDL cholesterol levels. Removing them from your diet will almost certainly result in a measurable increase in HDL levels. Click here for a quick and easy review of trans fatty acids and the heart.

Alcohol. With apologies to the American Heart Association, which discourages doctors from telling their patients about the advantages of alcohol: one or two drinks per day can significantly increase HDL levels. More than one or two drinks per day, one hastens to add, can lead to substantial health problems including heart failure -- and there are individuals who will develop such problems even when limiting their alcohol intake to one or two drinks per day. Click here for a quick and easy review of alcohol and the heart.

Increase the monounsaturated fats in your diet. Monounsaturated fats such as canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil and in the fats found in peanut butter can increase HDL cholesterol levels without increasing the total cholesterol.

Add soluble fiber to your diet. Soluble fibers are found in oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and result in both a reduction in LDL cholesterol and an increase HDL cholesterol. For best results, at least two servings a day should be used.

Other dietary means to increasing HDL. Cranberry juice has been shown to increase HDL levels. Fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids can also increase HDL levels. In postmenopausal women (but not, apparently, in men or pre-menopausal women) calcium supplementation can increase HDL levels.

PBA fan files raps vs Arboleda, Yee
(The Philippine Star) Updated October 23, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Businessman Alain Katigbac yesterday filed physical injuries charges against PBA players Wynne Arboleda and Mark Yee of Burger King for beating him up during the Burger King-Smart Gilas game last Friday.

In his nine-page affidavit-complaint before Quezon City assistant prosecutor Rafael Villordon, Katigbac charged that Arboleda and Yee repeatedly beat him during the second quarter of the game.

Heckled by Katigbac after Arboleda committed a flagrant foul on Macmac Baracael, Burger King guard attacked the Gilas fan in his front row seat. The victim suffered a lump on his face as he took a kick and series of blows from Arboleda while Yee allegedly hit him with his knees.
