LGU Philippines / Pork Meat Products in Region XI
« on: March 05, 2020, 03:37:52 PM »
PIA Davao City – The Department of Agriculture (DA XI) is promoting the consumption of pork meat products in Region XI amidst reported cases of African swine fever all over the said region. This is in support of Executive Order 105 establishing the National Task Force for Animal-Borne Diseases wherein the government is tasked to control the spread of ASF and other potential diseases that may affect the livestock in the country.

Regional Director Doctor Rolando Marquez of the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS XI) stresses the importance of how proper inspection and assessment of meat products is necessary for controlling the spread of ASF in the region. “Sa ating mga pag iinspeksyon sa mga palengke, lagi po nating tinitingnan at sinusuri na yung mga ibinebenta sa ating mga pamilihan ay galling sa mga lehitimong katayan,” Marquez said.
In light of this, 6 pigs were slaughtered and roasted for the Lechon parade and free taste that was organized by the Bankerohan meat vendors association in cooperation with the Local Government of Davao, Barangay 5-A, NMIS XI and the DA XI. (PIA XI/K Caro)

PIA Davao City: The Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held Thursday (March 5) the site activation in 5 key areas and done simultaneously with Quezon City as the main site of the project launching.

Besides Davao City, other areas with sites activated with the Free Wi-Fi are Albay, Isabela, Lanao del Sur, and Palawan.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, represented by City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, commended the movers of the said project citing that provision of such service would address economic, social, and educational challenges experienced especially in remote communities.

The ceremonial activation was led by DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan and Undersecretary Elisio M. Rio Jr. Meanwhile, the DICT XI with the residents of Barangay Matina Biao, Tugbok simultaneously gathered at the barangay hall covered court to do the provincial activation.

Barangay Captain Carlo Malaki II thanked the government offices concerned especially the Davao City LGU for choosing the barangay as one of the project recipients.

“ We will ensure that the technology will be taken with care and used responsibly. Since the free wifi coverage could only cater within 30 meters from its base, the barangay will meet and come up with a policy that would ensure that this service will benefit as many people possible”, said Malaki.

The DICT-UNDP Free Wi-Fi For All Project committed to continuously contribute to the achievement of the five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by deploying 6,000 free Wi-Fi sites and enhancing the citizen’s capability to use ICT.

Book Reviews / Books By Dr. Ben Diokno
« on: March 02, 2020, 08:41:14 PM »
FOUR BOOKS PENNED BY DR. BEN DIOKNO LAUNCHED

Dr. Benjamin Diokno, Central Bank Governor and former Budget Secretary launched today four books he penned about issues that materially impact the country’s pursuit of inclusive economic growth during an event held at the Philippine International Convention Center.

According to Dr. Diokno, “In these publications, I discuss critical economic issues with candor as I believe that a sensible appreciation of facts, in full and without frills, is essential to formulating workable and effective economic policies.”

“I see these books providing valuable inputs to national decisionmakers, both present and future,” added Dr. Diokno, whose work distilled his broad experience as an economist, educator and public servant.

In “Through the Looking Glass: A Look into Public Economic Issues in the Philippines,” Dr. Diokno dissects economic issues during three key junctures in history: the EDSA People Power Revolution, the Asian Financial Crisis, and the rise of a highly popular Philippine leader in 2016.

Meanwhile, “State of the Nation: A Retrospective Look into the Macroeconomic Issues of the Philippines,” presents Dr. Diokno’s insights on agriculture, infrastructure, foreign direct investments, poverty, as well as international trade and regional economic integration.

“Governance,” on the other hand, tackles the idea of public service in the context of three Philippine administrations.

Lastly, in “Holdap: The Truth about Pork,” Dr. Diokno shares his experience as a leading critic of the system that allocates budget for distribution by legislators, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2013.

Bohol Governor Yap partners with SPARK! in 2020 for women empowerment programs

Press Release: Provincial Governor of Bohol Arthur Yap continues partnership with gender equality organization SPARK! Philippines for the province’s women’s economic empowerment and gender and development programs this year. Governor Yap, a known women’s rights advocate, believes in the significant roles of women in both informal and formal economy and enabling them further will lead to the economic progress of the community.

Governor Yap first collaborated with SPARK! in July 2019 for the Workshop for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs in Bohol, a 3-day capacity building that is focused on developing the basic competencies needed by aspiring entrepreneurs which include the evaluation of business ideas, creation of a business plan, and lecture of key business principles. This was also in partnership with Angat Buhay, an initiative of the Office of the Vice-President and the J.Amado Araneta Foundation which gave the seed grant to each woman entrepreneur in the workshop.

The results of the program served as an indicator for Governor Yap and SPARK! to implement 2 more entrepreneurship boot camps in Bohol this year. With support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Workshop for Aspiring Female Entrepreneurs for women who are victim-survivors of gender-based violence, women from indigenous cultural communities, and women rebel returnees was held from 18 to 21 February. The New Zealand Embassy funded-program called AWEB or Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs Bootcamp, on the other hand, had its Visayas leg in the province from 26 to 28 February.

Both programs had a mix of learning methods such as presentations, discussions, and break-out sessions to ensure an engaging and pro-active activity alongside consultations with established entrepreneurs from the province. At the end of each training, each participant was awarded a seed grant for them to realize their business plans and will be subjected to monitoring and evaluation in the next 12 months. The implementation is in collaboration with the Bohol Investment Promotion Center, the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dalareich Food Products, and Ginto Chocolates.

“You are inspiring me. Kamo ang nakahatag ug inspirasyon nako (You all inspired me),” said Governor Yap during the awarding and closing ceremony of the Workshop for Aspiring Female Entrepreneurs. Governor Yap expressed praise for the program and interest in replicating it for the benefit of the women of Bohol. The ceremony was also joined by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ Senior Political Officer Atty. Jaymie Reyes. Governor Yap also joined the awarding and closing ceremony of the Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs Bootcamp along with SPARK! Philippines Trustee Maribel Teves-Quimson.

“I thank each and every one of you for participating wholeheartedly during this workshop, and I wish you all the best as you go out into the world with new skills, knowledge, and friendships,” said Mrs. Quimson during the Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs Bootcamp’s awarding and closing ceremony. New Zealand Embassy Ambassador-Designate H.E. Peter Kell extended his congratulations and well-wishes to the participants through a video message.

“These workshops are truly a blessing. SPARK! was and is a big part of my journey as an entrepreneur, and I hope they will be a part of yours as well,” said Dalareich Polot of Ginto Chocolates. Both activities leaned heavily upon the Bohol Investment Promotion Center, and the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Through Ms. Polot, SPARK! was able to connect with various Bohol-based entrepreneurs to serve as speakers, mentors, business pitch competition judges, such as Reginald Ong, Engr. Albert Uy, Mayette Sarabia-Gasatan, Tata Velloso, Atty. Jun Amora, and Rolaine Uy of the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Joy Angeli Uy, Engr. Allen Varquez, and Rommel Gonzales of the Bohol Association of Hotels, Resorts, and Restaurants; Elsa Polot of Dalareich Tableya; Junalyn Alivio of the Boholana Essentials; Nizah Bagares of Fred’s Book Cafe; Joan Caturza of JJ’s Seafood Village; Ma. Trina Sumayang of the Tubigon Loomweavers Multi-purpose Cooperative, Aimee Lim of Gerarda’s Family Restaurant; Duke Miñoza of Buenaventurada Farms; Roy Bayonas of Printbit; Gabrielle Moquiala of Wash & Chill Laundromat + Cafe; and Majoy Hornido of Cafe Majstea.
