Poems and Poets / Second Best by Rupert Brooke

Second Best by Rupert Brooke

   Here in the dark, O heart;
   Alone with the enduring Earth, and Night,
   And Silence, and the warm strange smell of clover;
   Clear-visioned, though it break you; far apart
   From the dead best, the dear and old delight;
   Throw down your dreams of immortality,
   O faithful, O foolish lover!
   Here's peace for you, and surety; here the one
   Wisdom — the truth! — "All day the good glad sun
   Showers love and labour on you, wine and song;
   The greenwood laughs, the wind blows, all day long
   Till night."  And night ends all things.
                                             Then shall be
   No lamp relumed in heaven, no voices crying,
   Or changing lights, or dreams and forms that hover!
   (And, heart, for all your sighing,
   That gladness and those tears are over, over. . . .)

   And has the truth brought no new hope at all,
   Heart, that you're weeping yet for Paradise?
   Do they still whisper, the old weary cries?
   "'MID YOUTH AND SONG, FEASTING AND CARNIVAL,
   THROUGH LAUGHTER, THROUGH THE ROSES, AS OF OLD
   COMES DEATH, ON SHADOWY AND RELENTLESS FEET,
   DEATH, UNAPPEASABLE BY PRAYER OR GOLD;
   DEATH IS THE END, THE END!"
   Proud, then, clear-eyed and laughing, go to greet
   Death as a friend!

   Exile of immortality, strongly wise,
   Strain through the dark with undesirous eyes
   To what may lie beyond it.  Sets your star,
   O heart, for ever!  Yet, behind the night,
   Waits for the great unborn, somewhere afar,
   Some white tremendous daybreak.  And the light,
   Returning, shall give back the golden hours,
   Ocean a windless level, Earth a lawn
   Spacious and full of sunlit dancing-places,
   And laughter, and music, and, among the flowers,
   The gay child-hearts of men, and the child-faces
   O heart, in the great dawn!

Unto a caitif wretch, whom long affliction holdeth,
And now fully believ's help to bee quite perished;
Grant yet, grant yet a look, to the last moment of his anguish,
O you (alas so I finde) caus of his onely ruine:
Dread not awhit (O goodly cruel) that pitie may enter
Into thy heart by the sight of this Epistle I send:
And so refuse to behold of these strange wounds the recitall,
Lest it might m' allure home to thyself to return.

Philippine Archive / Most fruits have low Glycemic Index
« on: February 23, 2020, 03:35:35 PM »
Feature: Most fruits have low Glycemic Index
by Salvador R. Serrano/ 2012
Thirteen fruits studied by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (or FNRI- DOST) were found to have low Glycemic Index (GI)

GI is a number representing the increase in the level of blood glucose when we eat food with carbohydrates. Saba banana, seedless grapes, Chinese pears, cantaloupe, watermelon, jackfruit, ripe carabao mango, papaya, red apple, guava and avocado have low GI. However, lakatan banana, pineapple and raisins have medium GI.

A book entitled “Glycemic Index or G.I. of commonly consumed carbohydrate foods in the Philippines” is now for sale at the FNRI-DOST at 250 pesos for the soft-bound and 300 pesos for the hard-bound copy.

The book is a useful reference for diabetics who have to monitor their blood glucose level and also for health buffs who watch their weight.

TESDA allots P1 billion for training-to-employment program
by Jose Mari Garcia
CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan, Jan. 26, 2012 (PIA) -- Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has allocated a total of P1.1 billion for its scholarship program which will initially give jobs to 45,500 trainees upon graduation.

Speaking in the opening of the Central Luzon Regional Skills Competition yesterday here, TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said P500 million was allotted to the training program on business process outsourcing where 65,000 trainees will be enrolled into.

He said 70 percent or 45,500 of the trainees will be automatically employed in call centers which have continued to boom in the country, absorbing graduates and the unemployed with favorable compensation.

“Technical and vocational students should not be disparaged and discriminated. It is easier to land jobs if you are a TESDA graduate than a graduate of a two-year course,” said Villanueva.

The remaining P600 million will be allocated to training programs on tourism, semiconductor, agriculture and construction.

DPWH chief bats for long term solutions vs flooding, disasters

MANILA, January 31, 2012 (PIA) –- Public Works and Highways chief Secretary Rogelio L. Singson assured that P10.817 billion will be spent this year to carry out long term solutions to the country’s flooding and other water-related disasters.

Singson said DPWH will be giving priority to water catchments and impounding structures upstream of major rivers.

“In highly urbanized areas, climate change initiatives, and rehabilitation of flood-damaged structures will also be given priority,” Singson added.

According to the DPWH, among the identified major flood control projects for implementation this year are the Pampanga Delta & Pampanga River projects; Laoag River Basin and Sabo Project; Bicol River Basin and Watershed Project; Mindanao River Basins; Mandaluyong City drainage improvement project; Cagayan de Oro River Basin; Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP), Phase II; Mt. Pinatubo Hazard Urgent Mitigation Project, Phase III; San Roque Multi-Purpose Project, Flood Control Component; and drainage protection works along national roads and bridges nationwide.

The DPWH will also continue prioritizing flood control projects in major and principal river basins based on completed master plans this year.

“We will continue the promotion of innovative technologies such as geotextiles and coco-netting in slope protection and soil erosion control; promotion of rainwater harvesting and retarding basins; and support other agencies’ efforts in non-structural measures such as hazard mapping of the DENR, flood monitoring and forecasting of DOST/PAGASA, and relocation of informal settlers living along river ways and esteros,” added Singson.

Feature: Coconut sugar and syrup are promising alternative sweeteners
by Salvador Serrano: posted in 2012

Coconut sap, the fluid from coconut flowers that are cut systematically, can be turned into sugar.

According to the Glycemic Index of Commonly Consumed Carbohydrate Foods in the Philippines, a book published in 2011 by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science (or FNRI-DOST), the resulting sugar has a low glycemic index.

This has made coco sugar and syrup popular alternative sweeteners among a growing number of diabetics and health buffs, but health and nutrition experts still advise consumption of cocosap sugar and syrup be done in moderation under their supervision.
