press releasePeople may visit islands to fulfill dreams and fantasies of grand vacations.
Inabanga Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy visits islands too - to fulfill a responsibility.
With Councilors Nolasco Salazar, Rene Vitor, Amormeo de la Torre, Nena Melecio, newly installed Chief of Police Melanio Artiaga and some of his men, some barangay captains and local government personnel in tow, Jumamoy visited the island barangays of Hambongan and Cuaming to determine the situation of his constituents.
He assigned personnel to conduct a Special Refresher Course for Food Establishment Operators and Food Handlers even as he observed fishermen doing a day's work.
He visited areas in the islands now planted to seaweeds locally known as guso - the alternative Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado has been offering fishermen who used to employ illegal methods like dynamite and cyanide fishing.
Jumamoy also snorkeled in the marine sanctuary to get first-hand information on the status of the corals and fish stock to use as comparison to benchmarks.
Using the "soft approach," he asked fishermen to demonstrate the "assembly" of a "dynamite" even as he issued a stern warning for them not to use the same.
The sea's bounty is not limitless, he stressed. Be sea watchers and protectors, not catalysts for ruin and destruction, he urged.
Jumamoy also visited the elementary school where the pupils admitted that there were from six to 11 members of their respective families.
This brought to the fore Jumamoy's advocacy of population management. He asked health workers and the barangay officials to distribute the contraceptives and medicines that his team had brought along.
He lectured the islanders on responsible parenthood. Child care should not be limited to feeding, clothing and putting a roof above the heads of their children. It extends to education too, he said.
He repeated his spiel to the islanders of Hambongan where they stayed overnight.
Capping the day's activity was a gathering around a bonfire where Jumamoy and his team immersed with the people to determine their needs to help plan the next steps in his governance.
