The 'Unselfie Movement' for PHL typhoon victims

what is an 'unselfie'?

it's posting a picture of oneself but with the face covered with a piece of paper on which the URL of the donation page for aid to the victims of the typhoon yolanda (haiyan) is written.

the idea was started by BBDO Guerrero in manila.  it spread worldwide.

Want to Help Typhoon Haiyan Victims? Post an 'Unselfie'

An ad agency exec has applied his marketing prowess to help funnel aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan by starting a movement of "unselfies."

Nicholas Bordas, VP at TBWA/Europe and president of Being Worldwide, proposed the idea, which he had spotted elsewhere, to his 61,000 LinkedIn followers on Thursday. The idea originated with BBDO Guerrero in Manila, though.

"Social networks in the Philippines have become indispensable sources of information and aid for Haiyan survivors," Bordas noted in the post. "Photos not relevant to the current disaster are discouraged. However, people have been posting 'unselfies' where instead of showing their face, they show their support for the Philippines by holding up a piece of paper with the URL of the donation page to send aid."

The pictures direct users to SupportUnicef.org/Philippines, where they can donate money to Typhoon Haiyan victims.

The simple idea has caught on among Instagram and Twitter users, where it serves as a nice counterpoint against solipsistic selfies.

"PG" is not parental guidance here; it's Philip Goldberg, the new US ambassador to the philippines who arrived yesterday, 25 november 2013.


Goldberg posted on his Twitter account an “unselfie” – where he covered his face with a note calling for donations and assistance for the victims of Yolanda.

Netizens lauded this move by Goldberg, whose appointment was earlier criticized. He was earlier expelled from Bolivia supposedly for conspiring in the unrest against President Evo Morales. (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/)
