i don't know how true the stories are, but it is said that the sto. nino image in the procession for the christ child's feast day is not the original one.  that's believable, and understandable considering the risk that's expected in such a public exposure to a massive crowd.

the one at the altar (as shown in lorenz's posts) is purportedly isn't also the original one.  the original one is too historic, too priceless as a piece of art, aside from its sacredness, that it had to be hidden safely in parts unknown.  this i find hard to believe, though i would still tend to understand.  the original, be it hidden or the one that we see, is a piece of art that's irreplaceable.  (whether we venerate the original or its copy won't make any difference in our faith and sincerity anyway.)

so far, the one that's venerated at the basilica's side altar is said to be protected by bulletproof glass.  and so far, i haven't heard of attempts to steal the image, unlike those hapless images at the baclayon church.

mga boang ra pood mo try to steal the sacred image of Santo Nino. mo tuo baya ko sa gaba.

tinuod ni what i tell you guys:

when i was in leyte, i happened to go to the shrine of San Roque sa Pintuyan. i was told hat someone tried to steal the image of San Roque , the patron saint of Pintuyan, however, when the individual took the image of the saint, that person was struck down with disease. as was told to me by the local herbal doctor (quack doctor), that thief's eyes were literally popping out of his eyes, and his stomach enlarged by the day. this person could not defecate. he went to the local quack doctor, who, after seeing the person's situation, knew that he stole something. the quack doctor's advice to him was prompt , direct as well as simple, "i-balik to imong gi kawat".

the thief , after being told by the quack doctor, returned the statue of San Roque back to the shrine where it came from.

when he arrived at the shrine, there were old ladies there (mga tigulang nga kahibalo mo benediksyon og mo ampo) met the thief and thanked him for returning the statue.

after the statue was returned, his ailment slowly faded away.

na gabaan to'ng tawhana, pero gi balik nija og nag pasayloa to sija sa mga tigulang baje nga mo hatag og benedisyon sa shrine, na wa ijang gibati.

tinuo ni. i was told of this incident by the same quack doctor; the one who gave me a panuhot massage when i was in leyte.
