An interesting historical tid bit for everyone!
When the first Chinese settlers came to the Philippines, they introduced traditional Chinese food to the local Malays. One Chinese food that became ingrained in Filipino society was Pancit. The Chinese introduced noodles to the Filipinos. Pancit Canton etc is but an amalgamation of Chinese and local Filipino ingredients, drippled with some Spanish influence.
Another is what Pinoys call
Shiopao. It is the Filipino version of the original called
Xiao Long Bao.

The word
Pancit Canton is interesting. It is the most popular type of Pancit in the Philippines.
Do we all know what it means?
The word Pancit refers to noodles; the word Canton refers to the southern part of China where the Han Chinese speak the dialect called Cantonese. Canton refers to the land of the Cantonese speakers. So, the term Pancit Canton means = Cantonese Noodles.
Why? Most of the Chinese immigrants to the Philippines during the great Chinese immigration of the 18th and 19th centuries were Cantonese Chinese. It is estimated that some 1-2 million Chinese emmigrated to Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. Most of them were Cantonese Chinese.
