Airports in the fourth largest U.S. city of Houston on Monday reported flight delays and cancellations due to Hurricane Sandy which has forced the cancellation of thousands of fights nationwide.
The Houston Airport System had posted a warning on its website listing almost 30 destinations with cancellations, according to local TV channel abc13. Destinations with canceled flights include New York, Pittsburgh, Philly, Baltimore. Small delays were reported at Hobby Airport in Houston, but George Bush Intercontinental, another airport in the city, was reporting significant delays starting Sunday evening and continuing to stack up Monday morning, said the report. At least 5,500 flights across the country had been canceled for Monday due to Sandy, and the figure was expected to go up, according to media reports.
About 1,200 flights were scratched for Sunday and more than 5, 500 for Tuesday as airlines scrambled to prepare for the storm. An additional 640 flights were dropped for Tuesday. Air travel at major national and international travel hubs including airports in New York and Washington, D.C. will halt for at least two days as super storm Sandy nears the mid-Atlantic coast Monday. The storm is expected to affect as many as 50 million people in the region.
Forecasts said the center of Hurricane Sandy will push toward the East Coast by Monday evening. Sandy stayed on a predicted path that could take over Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
