Ernest Hemingway was one of the more famous lovers of polydactyl cats. He was first given a six-toed cat by a ship's captain. As provided in his will, his former home in Key West, Florida (The Ernest Hemingway Home & Musueum), currently houses approximately fifty descendants of his cats, approximately 50% of whom are polydactyl. The house and its feline residents make a brief appearance in the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill.

"One cat just leads to another...
the place is so damned big it doesn't really seem as though
there were that many cats until you see them all moving
like a mass migration at feeding time..." -
