Most canyons were formed by a process of long-time erosion from a plateau level. Sometimes large rivers run through canyons as the result of gradual geologic uplift. Some of these canyons provide us with scenery and natural heritage that is not very usual to see.

So here I have compiled some of the most incredible canyons around the globe. I hope you will like it and will get amazed my seeing beautiful pictures.

Copper Canyon

Copper Canyon actually consists of 6 canyons and is located in Chihuahua in Mexico, and is at least four times larger than the more famous Grand Canyon! The name actually comes from the copper/green color of the walls of the canyon.

Wulingyuan Canyon

Wulingyuan Canyon in China is reminiscent of Bryce Canyon but with its own breathtaking beauty. Over 3000 sandstone pillars tower up to 800 m from a densely-forested valley floor, with trees clinging to their sides.

Bryce Canyon

The erosion in Bryce Canyon, Utah, has created some of the most beautiful geologic structures on the planet. These ‘hoodoos’ are up to 200 ft high. The night sky above the canyon is one of the darkest in North America, making it popular with stargazers. Up to 7500 stars are visible to the naked eye.

Grand Canyon

The most famous canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon, is found on the Colorado River. Although not the deepest or widest in the world, it does offer an amazing snapshot into the geologic history of North America.

Horseshoe Bend

The Horseshoe Bend, named for its almost circular shape, is also found on the Colorado River. From the canyon walls to the river is a spectacular 1000 ft drop.

The Slot Canyons

The Slot Canyons of Arizona are just an hour’s drive from the more famous Grand Canyon, and these are truly unique. They don’t appear much from the ground level, just a crack in the desert, but on entry you might as well have entered into another world.

A canyon (occasionally spelled cañon) or gorge is a deep ravine between cliffs often carved from the landscape by a river. Rivers have a natural tendency to reach a baseline elevation, which is the same elevation as the body of water it will eventually drain into. This forms a canyon.

Most canyons were formed by a process of long-time erosion from a plateau level. The cliffs form because harder rock strata that are resistant to erosion and weathering remain exposed on the valley walls.

Canyons are much more common in arid areas than in wet areas because physical weathering has a greater effect in arid zones. The wind and water from the river combine to erode and cut away less resistant materials such as shale. The freezing and expansion of water also serves to help form canyons. Water seeps into cracks between the rocks and freezes, pushing the rocks apart and eventually causing large chunks to break off the canyon walls which are also known as frost wedging. Canyon walls are often formed of resistant sandstones or granite. --Wiki

Speaking of canyons, one remembers these lyrics:

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner, forty-niner,
And his daughter Clementine.

    Chorus:

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.
