Batik Is Beautiful
« on: March 29, 2011, 04:47:51 PM »
Batik (Javanese pronunciation: [ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian: [ˈbatɪʔ]; English: /ˈbætɪk/ or /bəˈtiːk/) is a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique.

Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has notable meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white, which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Visnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are most commonly available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.

Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns that normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch cultures. In the colonial times pesisir batik was a favourite of the Peranakan Chinese, Dutch and Eurasians.

UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on October 2, 2009. As part of the acknowledgment, UNESCO insisted that Indonesia preserve their heritage.

Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are also found in several countries such as Malaysia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore. Malaysian batik often displays plants and flowers to avoid the interpretation of human and animal images as idolatry, in accordance with local Islamic doctrine.

Batik is psychedelic.

Yes, especially modern free-form and stylized designs. But even the staid traditional geometric designs--many of them anyway--have some kind of pyschedelic touch, too.

i wonder why the philippines is not mentioned here.  could it be that batik is less common in the country except in southern mindanao?

it used to be that i went for 'malong' made of batik cloth as house wear and sleep wear (instead of dusters), and always these were from southern mindanao.  what i took for batik turned out to be okir, after all.  thanks to tb (and hubag), i'm now enlightened.

Machine-made printed cotton malongs are made in Indonesia specifically for export to the Philippines, and are commonly referred to as "batik" because the item is imported; those inexpensive machine-made malongs are used for everyday purposes.  (wikipedia)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

i learned that real, woven batik is very expensive.  those made in china are the printed inexpensive ones, it is said.  well, i can still assure myself that china will soon tire of its inexpensive labor that makes it possible for it to become the world's factory.  besides, there's quality as a factor.  try buying a kitchen knife that looks like it came straight from solingen.  it won't last a week.  the handle will fall off before you can even get to sharpen it.

disclaimer:  the furniture that bugsay is making there is a class by itself, hehe. ;D

what struck me about these batik designs as posted here was that nothing resembled even that of maranao art, which almost always shows the piako-paku design, after those edible ferns that are (or were) traditionally abundant in the area.  and the batik cloths i'm familiar with carried this design.

more striking, piako-paku art is similar to the more known paisley design of scotland.

psychedelic art

Psychedelic Art is informed by the notion that altered states of consciousness produced by psychedelic drugs are a source of artistic inspiration. The psychedelic art movement is similar to the surrealist movement in that it prescribes a mechanism for obtaining inspiration. Whereas the mechanism for surrealism is the observance of dreams, a psychedelic artist turns to drug induced hallucinations. Both movements have strong ties to important developments in science. Whereas the surrealist was fascinated by Freud's theory of the unconscious, the psychedelic artist has been literally "turned on" by Albert Hofmann's discovery of LSD. (wikipedia)

Hmm, since you're already into candle-making, Ms. Isle, why don't you go into batik as well? Sayon ra man kuno ni himoon...

"The tools and materials for batik-making are simple: Beeswax, paraffin, and rosin, are used for making the resist. Denatured alcohol is needed for the spirit lamp to heat the wax, and benzine for cleaning the wax resist from the batik. The little instrument used as a container for the hot wax is not unlike a small copper teapot with a long handle. It is called a "tjanting" by the Javanese. These tjantings have spouts or tubes for conveying the hot wax resist. And these tubes are of various sizes regulated for making fine or coarse lines. This little instrument can be made by any metal worker or skilled tool maker. It is wisest to make it of thin sheet copper, because it is then lighter to hold and heats more easily. The Javanese make their tjantings also of copper using bamboo for the handle.

"All the line work of design can be done with this tube. Large masses or spaces, however, are more easily filled in with very hot wax and an ordinary paint brush.

"A small spirit lamp, a tripod to hold the wax receptacles and several small enamel bowls, complete the equipment for wax-resist printing. A spool of copper wire might be added because it is convenient to use a piece of it in clearing the spout of the tjanting. Even after the wax is carefully strained, particles of dust are apt to get into the tubes and interfere with the free flow of the wax."
